I suspect their little prank backfired on them somewhat.Qyburn said:
I think he's exactly the sort of person who should stay clear of Tracker. It could end badly for someone who doesn't understand how it works, and doesn't even understand the difference between a bill and a monthly DD. I could see him joining Tracker, then setting his DD to say £90 because "Some one said you save at least 30%". Then in six months time a big tantrum because debt has built up.SAC2334 said:
I want to get him to see sense and join Tracker and stop being an idiot and apply for smart meters asap0 -
If it's the average price per day that LtMike77 wants to compare with the SVR then surely that is just what is shown in each bill without the need for any conversion? [the term "average" is frequently the cause of misunderstandings]Qyburn said:
The summarised prices from your bills will give the correct average. Tot up all the kWh figures from each bill, then tot up how much each month was billed. Divide total cost by total number of kWh, then add VAT. That's your personal average unit price.LtMike77 said:I would like to work out my savings on Tracker vs SVR more accurately than I have been.
So far I have just been using the average tracker price per month and would like to apply it daily to my daily usage. (probably won't be massive difference but still would like to do it.)

That's correct for the month, or whatever period the bill covers. To get an average over a longer period you need to divide the total price charged, by the total number of kWh. It won't be correct to just "average the averages" unless consumption was exactly the same each month.Telegraph_Sam said:If it's the average price per day that LtMike77 wants to compare with the SVR then surely that is just what is shown in each bill without the need for any conversion? It should be a capital offence to use the word average without definitions
Comparing the average cost over 24 hours on say 23rd July with the daily average for all 31 days in July is one interpretation. To compare this with the daily average for 365 days in 2023, using your "formula", is another.
All depends on what he wants to achieve."Today 2 August I used xxx kWh @ the SVR rate of yyy p/kWh. This compares with my actual Tracker charge of xxx kWh at the Tracker rate of zzz p/kWh on 2 August. The difference is my "saving".. No doubt there are other permutations galore.

In fairness, when the term 'average' was introduced into discussion, it was clearly the figure reported in the monthly bill, whereas the stated objective was to work out savings more accurately. So it is 'more accurately' that requires interpretation. The most likely interpretations are over time periods other than those covered in the monthly bills, or inclusive of things like the standing charge difference where present. Octopus Compare was built for exactly this purpose.

So why not total the bills, total the kWh, minus the standing charge, and work out the mean p/kWh for that period?Qyburn said:

I was not expecting a drop to 3.98p (NW) tomorrow.

Fair enough, but I thought it would be understood we're talking about Mean, rather than Median or Mode.Telegraph_Sam said:It should be a capital offence to use the word average without definitions
