Octopus Tracker

My understanding is that ultimately a meter has a limited lifespan and must be replaced eventually. The only new meters available today have smart capabilities, so if a property is to remain connected a smart meter will eventually have to be fitted, whether or not there is sufficient connectivity in the area for it to work as such. But I could see Ofgem at some point loading costs of manual billing onto the standing charge just as they have in the past for different methods of paying and intend to do for credit accounts.

From This is Money
"Octopus Tracker is not protected by the Ofgem price cap, which is currently at 30p/kWh for electricity and 27p/kWh for gas.Octopus has its own cap for the tracker, but this is significantly higher than Ofgem's."
'So the wholesale cost of gas and electricity can go up and down every single day. Octopus will look at the wholesale price, use that rate, times it by however much you use, add a little bit on and add on the standing charge.
'Their tracker tariff will literally change every single day.'
'The only protection this tariff is offering is that there's certainty on the standing charges at this moment of time.'

We mostly all know tracker inside out here as it is the tracker thread.hubb said:From This is Money

The average kWh price for us this year is 19p kWh for electricity and 5p kWh for gas.
The only people that cannot get on this tariff now is those without smart meters AND THATS A GOOD THING!
Perhaps start your own Octopus non smart meter tariff thread?2 -

How about a higher standing charge for those who decline a smart meter?BellaBlondykeTheThird said:
For the record I also agree time has come to either enforce smart meters legally, fine those who refuse and also increase their energy costs as they are not going to be a part of balancing the grid as we all strive for greener energynso they should bear the cost of not being a part of this greener approach.
That would surely shake out everyone but the die hards and those bypassing their dumb meters?1 -
Yep, I see your caps work , SO DO MINE! You are all obviously in the smart tracker club but I will trust the article over a few on this forum. If you want to stay deluded that smart meters will save the world then good for you.BellaBlondykeTheThird said:

Dumb meters - You mean the instruments that you were ok with for decades ? take a reading at the end of each month = accurate usage. If you are green minded like myself, I have a brain that I use that turns stuff off. I monitor my usage. I don't need to look at a digital display to tell me. Now that is dumb.BellaBlondykeTheThird said:

I have had a look at your profile and threads and posts and you seem to take advice from other knowledgeable people on the other sections of the MSE forum.
Why would you dismiss what this whole thread is about (all 448 pages) and the savings that can be made explained by the knowledgeable people here. This is MSE after all and many her can attest to saving 20-40% of their energy costs in the past 365 days.
There is obviously something behind your distrust of smart meters so why don't you fill us in on your fears?2 -
I don't have any fears, I just don't like being forced into something that won't necessarily benefit me other than fulfilling a meaningless agenda. I shall look at other tracker tariffs on other providers that won't demand you have a smarty pants meter.BellaBlondykeTheThird said:@hubbYep, I see your caps work , SO DO MINE! I actually thought that the tracker and flexible (the tariff I am on at present) were the same. My mistake granted.QrizB said:I must admit I was also puzzled how a poster could claim that Flexible was better than Tracker without any knowledge of what Tracker is or how it works.1 -
I'm not aware of any other supplier that offer a tracker type tariff.hubb said:
