  • if your readings on the app is missing a day twice so far in 2 weeks does the sys pick the missing readings up when i put meter readings in online

They have/had something in place to automatically go back and pull missing data, but it isn't perfect and not related to submitting a meter reading. If anything is missing when you are billed, then the whole period will be based on estimates between your manual readings.
  • In the case of missing data will the system accept substitute data from one of the sources referred to in this correspondence?

My experience so far (Gas Tracker), is that if you put in a manual meter reading when you are on Tracker, this will force you to be billed for your usage, but your usage will be spread across the days according to the Octopus formula.

From what I can tell, if there is missing data on the day that happens to be your billing day, and especially if the missing data is actually on the midnight slot, you won't get billed - I think that maybe they use the last slot as the trigger point so if the last slot is missing, nothing happens.  Last month for gas I had to submit a manual reading to get billed.

If there are missing 30 minute slots in your meter readings, you sometimes have to contact Octopus to ask them to retrieve the readings.  Sometimes this is not possible.  e.g. my gas meter sometimes drops periods of time and I think they are corrupted or not recorded on the meter itself - in this case they can't be retrieved.  These periods don't show up on other 3rd party trackers like Bright either.

My electric meter seems to be very reliable - up to now since I joined Octopus I did not see a single missing 30 minute slot.  The gas meter is much less reliable.

  • Going by gut feeling I always put in manual monthly readings so that I have them to go by. I get the impression that Octopus use these (mine) for billing purposes.

Q: Is there a generally accepted convention that unit rates - in this blog and otherwise - are quoted incl or excl VAT?? Seems to be such a basic point

Read you bill it is clear but might be easier if you print it off.

On that subject we do print out bills off.
  • Actually the bills are about the only place I see unit rates quoted ex-VAT these days. I always use and quote inc-VAT.

I do now print off the bills for cross checking

If we all did the same the world would be a better place.  Assumptions can be misleading !

I've not put in a manual reading since the smart meter was installed in January. Octopus's readings are more accurate as they're always at midnight at the end of the month. Sometimes I've taken a reading myself next morning just to sanity check. But it's Octopus's readings that go into my record.
