  • I’d like to know how the flexible rate would save me so much money.

I assume this estimated cost is based on  today’s rates so isn’t really representative. (Estimated usage is 2900kwh electricity , 20,000kwh gas). I’d be really happy with a bill of £400 per year for electricity.

Bill last month was £86 for combined fuel use, Octopus watch figures suggest around £60 this month.

As ever, gas is cheap when nobody needs it...
A couple of tweets from Greg...

In this part of the world, autumn arrived in the middle of September, so the heating has been on ever since - woke up to a fully frosted car this morning...
Yep, our heating kicked in in the middle of September.
(Even if we hadn't noticed the heating, my body still would have been a good indicator - hands have been purple since the temperature dropped )
  • Today here in Yorkshire it's freezing, it's raining, we have a "Yellow warning - Thunderstorm". But thanks to Octopus Tracker tariff i am today paying 3.20p/kWh to keep me warm. I know it's not as good as yesterday when it was below 2, but i am still very very happy with this

Unless someone can provide a reference to the specific EU direwctive, I think that comment was a joke not a serious statement.
It was not a joke, there was a EU directive on it back in the 90's so may have been EC rather than EU.  Something to do with harmonising to allow consumers to easily compare prices.  Information was printed on British Gas bills at the time when the pricing of units changed from therms to kWh, 1991 I think.

OK, I can believe that an EU Directive requires consumer bills to be priced per kWh.
It was the idea that the EU specified that the wholesale market works in therms that I was struggling with!

Marex looks to be a bit higher again tomorrow, maybe another 1p/kWh or so.

Don't worry, soon the blues will have their way and we'll be calculating everything in BTUs, firkins, or the size of Jacob Rees-Mogg's nanny's favourite pan.
