One thing is for sure, Octopus have a track record of going above and beyond for customers so I suspect they will do the right thing and are probably working out what that is.

Best to hang fire for a bit

If Martin's hunch about pro-rata reductions on fixed tariffs as well as SVT is correct, then I'm still trying to get my head around how this will work on Tracker? Do you use the same calculation and then apply a 30%-ish reduction at the end of it?
He backed off of that one shortly after it was posted, he has been jumping a little too quickly for the keyboard during these changes.
It was never going to be pro-rata, but he followed up suggesting it would be a reduction of a similar monetary value...
I doubt whatever is done will amount to a reduction below the level of the new cap though...

They could close tracker and Agile to new customers though
I think that's a given with the Gov't intervention unless those tariffs do not come under those same caps, even allowing existing customers to benefit from the Gov't cap and a potential fall in prices goes go against the spirit of the cap that is designed to ensure no one of average use pays more than £2500, for Octopus to take Gov't money to pay the difference between wholesale and cap and also allow customers to benefit and pay below SVT rates on certain days when wholesale prices fall was not what the cap was intended.

I have no specific expectations, no idea what they'll do, but it's nice to be with a supplier I trust to do their best.

[It would be *really* nice if the 55p Tracker cap could be replaced with the 40p though … :innocent: (obviously we only went for it as insurance against January's price rise).  Not an expectation, just a wish.]

This is the best credible outcome for Tracker; the Tracker caps are reduced, as appropriate, to align with the new Governement capped rates.

I asked Octopus to put me on the waiting list for the Tracker just after midnight on 28th August (that's early on the morning of 29th). I received a reply on 6th Sept. inviting me to sign up. When I go to the sign-up page, it says:

"Update: as of 16:00 Monday 29 August, the maximum Tracker gas rate has been increased to 22p/kWh and electricity rate to 78p/kWh to reflect continuing wholesale market prices. Any enquiries received before this time will be quoted at previous cap."

So it looks look I could get the 'old' rates. Is this still a good bet, I wonder?

Can anyone confirm what the previous rates where?
  • Octopus have some of the more specialised tariffs that who knows how they will look after the govt detail is made clear.

Even the likes of fixed EV tariffs, the latest version of Go have a peak rate of 40 odd pence but off peak of 7.5 - 8.25p, how do you square those tariffs if the SVT rate ends up at around 35p, there is also another tariff that has had a bit of discussion on here called price promise, this tariff guarantees to be at least £50 below the energy cap until sometime next year, but with this new cap being govt supported will that still apply? I just think its easier to have one SVT that is protected and then allow everyone to move to the SVT with no fees if they choose,
