  • I have seen them exchange an item for a different size before but I think you are right about the no exchange rule. I would appreciate any posting about a really cheap sale. I change size on a regular basis and tend to buy a lot of clothes because of that. Any bargain buys are a real help.

janeym8 I get my OH to go by going to the DIY shops in the Hillington area so that might be worth a try.
  • Did 70 mile round trip to return skirt as planned. As I didn't have receipt they checked every purchase through my matalan card and my daughters matalan card and they came to the conclusion that I didn't buy the skirt and am shoplifter.
Bearing in mind that this took place is a busy store over about half an hour. I was then treated to a patronising lecture by a member of what I assume to be management when I was quoted rules about proof of purchase (incorrectly) and I left without making my newly selected purchases and with the skirt in the old size which I will now have to alter or chuck.
Was so angry and humiliated as I did buy the skirt and have lifted the wrong size accidentally. I have found that a lot of the clothing has pulls and small flaws and often change after trying on so think it was probably on wrong hanger.
Have found that staff regularly put through items incorectly in this shop. Have been overcharged on almost every visit and some times they put through 2 items at same price on same code even although they are different codes. If you are buying a lot they cut corners in the scanning.
Have had a matalan card for 20 years since they opened shop in Wishaw. Could see from purchase list that I do buy and my daughter is also a regular customer. Cannot see why they would want to treat a customer in this way. They could see my address and know how long my journey was and all I wanted was to change the size. Don't know what people get out of treating people like this and they lost sale in the process. Doubt I will go back.
  • Have just emailed Matalan with complaint re treatment. Will keep you up to date with reply but don't expect much.
  • I feel sorry for these people in retail outlets. The whole point of giving people their receipts when they buy items is PROOF OF PURCHASE. I cant understand these people who lose the receipt and in some cases even take tags off and expect the staff to have a crystal ball and know that you've actually bought the goods and are genuine customers. You must remember thay face 100's of people on a weekly basis and some of whom are actual shoplifters and it is these people who are ruining it for the rest of you not the shop keepers. So my plight is be fair and KEEP those receipts and you'll have no problems!!!

I would have accepted if I had been told that there would be no exchange I did not need to be humiliated or be accused of not buying the item. It was evident from their search that I am a customer. I deal with the public and would never treat anyone in this manner.

Both Marks and Spencer and Next have clearance stores and still treat their customers well. Perhaps they understand the importance of good customer service.

I would guess from your phrasing that you work for Matalan.

I have worked in retail for over 20 years, both as a sales assistant and as a supervisor and I would never dream of accusing a customer of being a shoplifter, whether i suspected it or not. It is usually quite easy to tell if someone is genuine or not. Receipts do get lost and tags do fall off, sometimes not through a customers carelessness.
I don't understand what their problem is, it is pretty obvious that it is their stock as it will have their label on the inside of the skirt, I would only have a problem exchanging an item if it were a brand name, or something that you could buy in a number of different stores, as they could have bought it anywhere.
Some people have no customer service skills whatsoever

  • suprised to hear of anyone having problems as have never had or known of anyone to have problems in there, in fact in our experience its quite a friendly bunch in there?

in terms of refunds & exchanges - i've actually been caught out with that one before! bought a top for OH but took wrong size, took it back for exchange but was told that there was no refunds or exchanges, they then offered an exchange as a goodwill provided i had proof of purchase which i didn't! they asked for my matalan card, went onto a computer and brought up the details and seen the purchase and allowed me the exchange. i learnt two things that day 1)always take my matalan card & 2)keep receipts till i'm certain i'm keeping it!

have to be honest and say whilst i can understand you being really annoyed if they accused you off shoplifting it does sound like they tried to do the same for you as they did for us
