If your speedo said 49 then your actual speed will almost certainly have been less. (A speedo cannot display a speed less than the actual speed - the approvals say that they may over-read but must never under-read). If your dashcam (using GPS?) showed 49 then it's not clear what the actual speed would have been, but probably less.

Hi Jenni,
I aren’t too sure on the Speedo on my car because I wasn’t paying attention- I just knew I was speeding when I saw the van. After looking back on My next base 322 dash cam, the highest MPH it recorded was 49MPH Albeit for a brief second. I can’t say whether or not it was using gps- I don’t know how I’d find that out .

I can't think of how a dashcam would calculate speed except via GPS. 🤷‍♀️

We can all slightly without noting go over speed but 49 in a 30 zone.  I'm assuming you've had that car for more than a few days as with newer and better cars when you upgrade the cars do seem slower but you pay more attention.
No one wants to be booked doing 35 in a 30 zone on a clear night with hardly anyone around but 49, a bit much.
Your dash cam is pretty spot on from what I've read on the web.

You’re right. It does have GPS I’ve just checked . So that should be accurate, right?

and how true is that about your car Speedo been slower than what actually shows? Thought that was a myth

Yes I’ve had this car for going on two years now. Still, I know, no excuse!!  So we are quite confident then that the reading on the dash cam (49MPH) is accurate

Of course it uses GPS for the speed - there's no other way it can know what speed you're doing.

GPS speed is calculated by comparing positions across a few seconds, so can lag behind actual road speed when you're accelerating or decelerating.

Car speedos must not under-read. They can over-read by a small margin. They take their speed from the actual rotation of the wheels - so changing tyre size (or brand, or even wear) can affect accuracy.

1.  Those Band B guidelines only apply in court. There is no reason why the OP should have to go to court for the quoted speed - he will be offered a fixed penalty.

2. With 7 or 8 points he would NOT be one FP from a totting ban. An FP is 3 points, making 10.or 11 in all.

It seems obvious to me ... IF you receive a notification that they're seeking to prosecute in court THEN the Band B guidelines will apply (based on the actual speed vs limit). However they're saying that you're likely to be lucky and only receive a Fixed Penalty Notice of 3 points and £100 (?) fine. (That speed is way over the option for a Speed Awareness course).

If you already have 3 points then you should already know better ... there's no excuse whatsoever for 49 in a 30 limit.
