Negotiating on a used car deal
I've short-listed a Vauxhall Astra I like from the main dealer. They're asking £10,990 for a 1 year old 1.2T 145 SRi.
I plan to negotiate to see how far down I can get the price. How much have you got off the price of a car from a Vauxhall dealer? How much do you think I should offer?
I will also be trading in my old Astra - we will arrange an inspection next week to determine their offer price for this.
Any suggestions of strategies to use to negotiate?

Not a negotiating strategy, but you could enter the car reg into WBAC and that will show the auction prices which is the absolute rock-bottom for that car. Don't try to negotiate any lower.
Also check the price of similar cars on Autotrader (from which the price you state seems to be quite keen).
As you are trading your old car, the cost to change is the real number to look at, not the individual cost for each car on each side of the deal.
How will you pay for the car? If finance, a lower interest rate is another way to negotiate.
Check broker prices for brand new as well.1 -
You will be lucky if they inspect the PX. Dealers are not open, only servicing.
Mine was done via reg & my statement of condition.Life in the slow lane1 -
For the PX, get a price from WBAC., Motorway etc before setting out to agree a price with the dealer.1

It already looks to be one of the cheapest in the country, so be prepared for a polite "no". Theres no harm in asking of course.
Value of your car might be where you gain most - see what they offer, see what other local dealers offer, try WBAC, online buyers, etc. Try selling it privately.
If you need / want finance, try a cheap bank loan. Theres comparison sites so you could get it as low as 2.9% ish.
Dont accept any add ons, no matter how well priced they seem at face value.

Here's a strategy, accordng to Autotrader, a similar age Fiat Tipo can be had from £10k. Say you've seen the Fiat, but really do like the Astra but the price difference is sooooo large it makes it difficult. Obviously, that strategy right now doesn't work too well as we are in lock-down and you should not be driving from one dealer to another at present.1

Thanks, everyone.
The car is ex-demo. Vauxhall nationally are selling off a number if them with low mileage.

OP
Get prices form those that will buy your car and in our experience you are better off with no p/x. What we have done is just that, sold to WBAC, got the full amount, then phone them for a better price, they offered a couple of percent off we said no and put the phone down and the next day we got close to 7% off. Indeed it depends on the time you are time ie their sales targets, new registrations, model colour, toys on the car etc. Having said that, one of family does that every time and walks away from the showroom and gets a better deal on the phone and with covid, thank them on the phone and more often than not they will call you back within 48hours and if its not the 7% off we got I'm certain you'd get a better deal. You may want to feed the sales man the rbbish they often feed you and say you are waiting for a call back from another dealer who can better your offer and most likely they will improve it. Then ask for a tank of fuel you often get half at least.0 -

Chances are, they hope to make money from cheap trade-ins giving a profit at auction. Definitely important to check the value of the part-ex before negotiating.
They are so cheap, I'm tempted myself (except doing no mileage anywhere ate present, so why waste £10k?)
I put one of the listed vehicles into WBAC and they valued at £9.5k. To retail that at £10.5k leaves nothing for the dealer.
