Chassis number and v5
Options
Vin number does not match my v5
I bought the car from a main dealer , they have serviced and mot it from new in 2015
took the car to a local garage today for mot , they couldn’t do it as vin number on car doesn’t correspond with my reg plate or v5 on VOSA database
so technically the main dealer has mot my car using a vin number that’s not on my car , they used the one on their system , so my MOT have been void for 3 years and I didn’t know
the dealer said mistakes happen on paperwork when the car was originally registered ,some lady got a car with my paperwork And plate on , I’ve got a car with her paperwork and plate number , I said , yes I agree that this does happen , but how have you done a mot on a car that technically you’ve never seen

they never physically checked the vin number apparently , I said you have broken VOSA rules not checking the car presented to you ...
they then said , we could just swap plates over , I said ..that won’t solve the issue with chassis number ,then he laughed as said swap cars with her !

They have took my car away today and give me a courtesy car while they “ look into it “ as I said my car is illegal as it no longer has a valid mot and hasn’t ever had one
all my servicing , mot etc is all in the other chassis number , so my car technically has no service history or mot history

I also stated , Had I sold my car , I would have sold a illegal car as paperwork etc doesn’t match to vehicle , got no response to that !
I’m at a loss to where I go from here , any help please

This is surprisingly common, and has been covered on here several times before.Try a google search using moneysavingexpert.com car wrong VINUnfortunately, none of them seem to have any resolution beyond going back to the dealer. The simplest would be to swap numberplates & logbooks with the other person, Whether DVLA would do this without adding 1 to the number of keepers I don't know- otherwise you simply get together with the other person and transfer keepers to each other. The dealer should compensate you for the admin fee with your insurerI want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

The easiest solution here is obviously for the dealer to buy the car off you for a price as if there was no paperwork discrepancy.
The tester should indeed have looked ON THE CAR for the VIN.

But swapping number plates and v5 isn’t the answer
my car service and mot history has been wiped out..it corresponds to the other ladies car , her service history and mine will not be the same , nor with mileage/ date of tests etc match
I can’t sell the car or part exchange it , it would be illegal as paperwork and car don’t match
I don’t know other car owner , but I doubt she’s be happy with thisMy main concern is they mot the wrong car for 3 years , so I’ve drove around with no mot assigned correctly to my car , if I had been in a accident, god knows what would have happened , VOSA and DVSA have been informed , also I informed my insurance company as the dealer has took my car off me !
and if they buy the car off me , I’m not going to get enough to repurchase a like for like , my car is a limited edition as well0 -
I'd get the identity sorted, the dealer to sort out the service records and keep the car If I liked it.The alternative is the dealer buys it back- presumably at trade price and you have no car, or the dealer buys it as a part exchange against a new one.Don't worry about the past 6 years, nothing happened and you weren't worried at the time.Next time check the V5 is correct when it arrives. I'm like Fred- I expect "professionals" to get things wrong, and I'm rarely disappointed
I had a brand new yellow diesel Harley Davidson once according to the V5, and it was actually black and petrol,,,,

You complain you "can't sell it" - yes, you can. Back to the dealer, for a fair market value.0 -

Even if they do that , I can’t afford to buy a like for like car with the money they will give me
So therefore , I’d lose my car and have to buy a older cheaper car , not with same spec0 -
So what DO you want?
Nobody has a time machine. They can't go back to when the car was registered, or when you bought it, and correct the error at source.
You seem unwilling to accept the simplest resolutions.
You refuse to accept a simple paperwork-swap with the owner of the other half of the mis-matched pair.
You complain that you can't sell your car - then you refuse to accept it being bought back at the fair market value as if the situation was not present.
So... what DO you want?
Remember, you've never once checked the paperwork and VIN match since you bought the car, either.0 -
