They can ask. Given its not the law in England from Thursday onwards, if they get it is another matter.

It is just not worth the aggravation. The stupid exemptions gave anyone who wanted one a get out of jail free card and there was a lot of aggression towards retail workers when trying to enforce masks, on balance most took the rather reasonable view that it was not worth it.

Can still refuse entry to premises if someone refuses to meet the conditions of entry.

Wishful thinking. The only shops likely to stick their heads above the parapet and do this are going to be small independent stores, even then you can utter the three magic words.

Oh yes most shops won't bother but I meant more they can if they want to exclude anyone from coming in as long as it isn't discrimination based on a protected characteristic.
And I agree the exemptions are a farce. (as most of Europe don't seem to have them in the same way)

Interestingly the only store I saw enforce anything well during the lockdowns was Costco, they enforced masks and limited the number of people who could shop in each group. But then group size is one of the their rules of membership anyway.
  • Costco would do well to look at other priorities, such as not having every queue for a checkout 20 people deep because they only have two on at any given time.

I didn't have that issue during the lockdowns as they were limiting entry and number of guests.
Since then I think I've only seen a queue longer than two people once. Maybe your local store has a lot of sickness?
  • I am going back a couple of years here, admittedly, my membership ran out, But every time I went in the queues for checkouts were always ridiculous, with many of them not operating.

They still are, doesn’t matter what time of day we go there’s always a fair wait to get through checkout. We went once during lockdown when grocery shops were allowed to open and it was just the same and it was still crowded.
