I think your only real option is to complain to eBay but after 6 months use you'll have a hard time so it's best chalked up to experience.

What did the place look like when you got there? Piles of old tyres? Farm building?
What did the stickers look like? Showing signs of age since the tyres are presumably 20+ years old to not have a DOT code?
  • Who on earth would buy tyres off ebay to start with......?
Why not? I have been buying tyres and many other items on eBay for last 15 years, along with hundreds of thousand others people, you really can't understand why?
Why on earth is that a problem?

The guy appeared to be selling from home as part of his business, as many do.
The tyres stickers were in place and as expected for new tyres.
I did not look for date as never imagined for one moment someone was selling 14 year old tyres as new.
Even when I realised something was wrong due the way tyres perished it took 3 mechanics and 2 emails to manufacturer to find the age date, so not as easy as you might think.

Rubbish, but you are entitled to an opinion even if it makes no sense.
  • Ok.. you said 'There is no legal age limit on selling or using tyres in the UK'  WRONG as you have now explained there is legal limits in place, just not for cars .. yet.
    He didn't state that.
    What he actually stated was:
    AdrianC said:
The offence will be fitting and using, not selling.
So it is legal to sell tyres of any age and when the legislation is in force, the offence will only occur if those tyres are actually used on certain vehicles whilst on public roads.

From 1 February 2021 it is illegal for the front (steering) axle or axles of:

    • goods vehicles with a gross mass more than 3.5 tonnes
    • buses
    • coaches
    • minibuses and also to the rear axle, or axles, unless equipped with twin wheels

to use tyres aged more than 10-years.

Semantics? no, not really. I can legally sell a device that can be used to scramble the signal from laser speed detectors and it's also perfectly legal for someone to buy this from me.
The offence only occurs if it's fitted and used on a vehicle on a public road in the UK.

The seller of the tyres hasn't broken any laws and if/when the legislation in question also covers private cars, they can still sell those tyres.
    So we ignore the law?
    A)  that something was not as described, NEW when in fact 14 years old.
    B) that item was not fit for purpose (and in fact turned out to be very dangerous)
    Seriously?

I can certainly understand buying many things off eBay - and I do.

But there is no way on the face of this planet that I would buy tyres off a supplier whose listings looked like those you are complaining about.
There is also no way I would buy them off even a reputable supplier without asking about the manufacture date.

But, then, I understand the difference between good value and cheap. You got what you paid for, and what was perfectly predictable from a listing looking like that. Cheap junk.

I notice the supplier is now flagging their tyre listings as "new old stock", although still with no reference to the actual date on some listings.

Otherlistings do specify the date - only three and a bit years old.

...and I leave it up to you to consider what that implies about the date where it's not specified.

How ancient is a Conti SportContact (1)?

The manufacturer's current offering is the SportContact 6...

Even back in 2012, the SportContact2 was being described as a "very old" tyre compared to the then-current 3.

  • Proceedings are in place to take the seller to small claims court.
He initially replied and stated his case, probably hoping I would not proceed.
He needed to respond to the next step in court proceedings, he failed to do this and has 7 days to do so or I will get judgement in my favour
But I have good knowledge of the law and legal system, I will win my case and it will cost the dodgy seller far more than the £98 cost of tyres.
I know trolls on these forums enjoy attacking anyone who posts, to many it's a game for them and they like to reply with unhelpful comments, often completely missing (or ignoring) the point of the post.

Yes he has got the message he should not have sold old stock as new... what's your point?
I could only find these exact tyres new in Europe, I paid virtually the retail price for these tyres, so again you are wrong
