Op where do you live, where did your son fill up his car , I'm betting it's not an attended petrol station
Having said all that I'm still struggling to understand how you could put diesel into a modern petrol car.0 -

providing the attendant is up to speed with all the latest health and safety guidelines, the fire brigade should of been called and the forecourt closed untill given the all clear by the fire brigade.
If he's running the car on fumes all the time, it could be sludge that's causing the problem. Did he go back and confirm that they put diesel in or is that just a guess?
Have you checked if the petrol station is actually attendant only? Because it seems kind of counter-intuitive.

Not heard of any filling station moving to attended service because of COVID. It would probably be more dangerous for the staff to be so close to customers and dealing with them through the car window than having the staff behind a Perspex screen like most places do.

Can't they think for themselves?0 -

Homer_home said:Sludge???Just general crap that'll get into a tank and cause problems (rust, condensation, contaminents) that aren't as problematic with a full tank (because any contaminent is more dilute). It's not likely to be an issue with a modernish well maintained car but we don't know anything about the OP's sons car to comment there.
I'm just throwing it out there as a possibility that seems more likely than an attendant managed to get diesel into a petrol car.

He must be quite a regular at this filling station if he only buys a tenner at a time. That'll get you barely 1 3/4 gallons, in old money....
I don't buy this 'attended service during covid' line. Unless everyone pays with cash, they are still going to have to leave their car to pay, whether at the till or through a hatch. You can't legally use a battery operated card machine on the forecourt because it would technically be a fire risk, as is a mobile phone.
I'll believe this when the OP names and shames the station. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
