I would bet a£100 quid that story his son told the op is utter bs, how many attended petrol stations are there????

Op where do you live, where did your son fill up his car , I'm betting it's not an attended petrol station
Did you not read the OP? This isn't normally an attended petrol station, they've simply put this in place due to Covid. My guess is it isn't one of the big name outlets.

Having said all that I'm still struggling to understand how you could put diesel into a modern petrol car.

if they were putting deisel in petrol car, the pump would of been too big for the filler neck. so when the tank was full, the auto cut off in the pump handle would not of worked. consequently there would of been deisel all down the side of the car, and all over the forecourt.
providing the attendant is up to speed with all the latest health and safety guidelines, the fire brigade should of been called and the forecourt closed untill given the all clear by the fire brigade.
The OP says "fill up", but he also says his son paid cash. I suspect he only asked for £10 worth, so spillage wouldn't have happened. If indeed any of it happened.

He does only full up in £10 ISH at a time.
£10 of diesel shouldn't be a problem, just fill the tank, pop a bottle of Redex in and drive it around.
If he's running the car on fumes all the time, it could be sludge that's causing the problem. Did he go back and confirm that they put diesel in or is that just a guess?

Have you checked if the petrol station is actually attendant only? Because it seems kind of counter-intuitive.

Not heard of any filling station moving to attended service because of COVID. It would probably be more dangerous for the staff to be so close to customers and dealing with them through the car window than having the staff behind a Perspex screen like most places do.

The old urban myth that sees fuel tank pickups floating on the surface of the fuel, I think...

    And still people believe it......

    Can't they think for themselves?

Also, I can't remember the last time I saw a "diesel pump" - it's now normally just different nozzles on the same pump.
They are definitely still around, there’s one in the village next to me. Attended service, no cards!

Just general crap that'll get into a tank and cause problems (rust, condensation, contaminents) that aren't as problematic with a full tank (because any contaminent is more dilute). It's not likely to be an issue with a modernish well maintained car but we don't know anything about the OP's sons car to comment there.

I'm just throwing it out there as a possibility that seems more likely than an attendant managed to get diesel into a petrol car.

He must be quite a regular at this filling station if he only buys a tenner at a time. That'll get you barely 1 3/4 gallons, in old money....
I don't buy this 'attended service during covid' line. Unless everyone pays with cash, they are still going to have to leave their car to pay, whether at the till or through a hatch. You can't legally use a battery operated card machine on the forecourt because it would technically be a fire risk, as is a mobile phone.
I'll believe this when the OP names and shames the station.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
