I would love to hear what the garage have actually said to the OP.0 -
The garage presumably confirmed which pump to use and he agreed.
If I remember correctly, putting diesel into a petrol engine isn't too damaging, just flush it out and it should be ok. How they managed to get diesel in given the nozzle size I don't know.
How empty was the tank when he started and how much was put in? A full tank of diesel will be worse than a quarter tank.
I initially thought it wouldn't be the garage to blame, but I'm curious as to how they got the diesel in in the first place and what measures they have in place to avoid mis-fuelling.

You would not be able to point to the actual pump from that sort of distance whilst in your car.
Derv nozzle does not fit petrol fuel opening at all
Driver would have seen attendant reach for the derv
Garages are not hiring attendants due to "covid", why would they? More of a risk to them and they would not sell drinks/snacks etc.0 -

The driver attendant.....0

I know that nowadays it's generally not possible to get a diesel nozzle into the filler hole on a petrol vehicle but has this always been the case?
If not, maybe the OP's son has an old car and the diesel nozzle did fit into the opening.0 -

Is it possible (assuming it's true at all) that the OP has mixed up what they were told? That in fact it was petrol put into a diesel car?Jenni x0

if they were putting deisel in petrol car, the pump would of been too big for the filler neck. so when the tank was full, the auto cut off in the pump handle would not of worked. consequently there would of been deisel all down the side of the car, and all over the forecourt.
providing the attendant is up to speed with all the latest health and safety guidelines, the fire brigade should of been called and the forecourt closed untill given the all clear by the fire brigade.0
