Never skimp on tyres, they are the most important part of the car. After all they are what keeps you on the road.

What I would say is, avoid winter and all season tyres in the UK. Unless you only use them in the snow/ice They very quickly wear out when used in the other 355 days of the year.  Just drive more carefully if you need to go out in the snow. But I stand to be corrected.

My mechanic always tells me to make sure all 4 tyres are the same. He reckons if they are all the same, they all make the same noise, therefore the ride is quiet. If they are all different, they all make a different noise, therefore the car is much louder. I am not convinced. He also sells and fits tyres at his garages, and reckons this sales pitch works on some punters.

    Cobblers.
First off, which part of "all season" do you think only covers ten days per year?

I dunno about your experiences of UK weather, but here in the hills of the Welsh borders, I'd say that across an average year "winter" outweighs "summer" by many people's normal definitions...

Great advice if you live in Madrid.

Otherwise I concur with AdrianC....... Cobblers.

I see these tyres on the Kwikfit site for £99.50 each.
That's fitted with VAT, old tyre disposal, balanced, TPMS stem/valve service.
Book online and you'll be in and out in no time with little of the usual waiting around drinking awful coffee or select mobile fitting then you can drink your own brew.

Asda tyres are fine; I've used them lots.  The fitters are well known businesses, either tyre dealers or main dealers.  They won't skimp/rush the job.  You can choose the company you want to use from a list.

I need 2 new tyres soon for a six year old BMW Series1 116i petrol F20

    Bridgestone Potenza S001 RFT 225/45R17 91W

I have used a well established local independent service garage many times in the last ten years for servicing, oil changes and tyres etc and I have always been very satisfied with them.

    However their price for the two tyres is £123.69 x 2 = £247.38 + VAT = £296.86

    ASDA tyres online price is:

    £96.61 each total £193.22

Fully Fitted Price- Includes VAT, delivery, fitting, balancing and disposal charges.

They have fitters within a few miles of my home, closer than my normal garage.

National, Black Circles and others are also cheaper than my garage.

I prefer to use my usual garage but not at an over £100 premium.

Are ASDA and other online tyre sellers safe to use?

Are the fitters likely to do a good and careful job or are they paid so little by ASDA etc they will rush the job.

Last time I had new tyres my garage refitted the existing valves as the car has Tyre Pressure Monitoring. Those valves are presumably the original now 6 year old valves. Might they need replacing?

Anything else I should consider or be wary of?

    Thanks

I used Asda Tyres years ago when they were the cheapest for the brand that i wanted and the localish tyre fitting place that i chose were the best i had ever been too. I went when it was quiet and had all four of the fitters working on my car and it was a very efficient process swapping the tyres, balancing, torqueing and swapping the wheels front to back at my request.
It was the quickest i had ever seen it done and i watched and they did everything properly.

Since then i have called them and got a quote directly for tyres and they are usually able to beat the cheapest price including fitting i can find, so always best to ring around decent tyre places locally to see what they can do.

Also the fact your local independent garage is charging you a £100 premium for the tyres seems they don't value your business much. My local garage who i use for repairs that i don't fancy doing don't even fit tyres but they have in the past taken it to a tyre fitting place and passed on their trade discount to me in the bill so if anything they are making a loss because of travel time.

F1 Autocentres have a bit of a discount going on at the moment, I checked the tyre the OP is looking at and it's around the same price as Asda, but they don't put the final discount on until checkout and I didn't take it that far. For a pair of tyres for my car at around £150, the discount is about 4.5%.

ETA - you must do that online though - I find F1 prices are much lower online than if you just walk into the place and buy, even though it's the same tyre fitted by the same person in the same depot.
  • OP, if you don’t fancy driving to a local garage to have your Asda tyres fitted check out the mobile tyre fitting websites. You may possibly find a better option.

We’ve used tyresonthedrive.com on 3 separate occasions last year at different addresses and the service we received was excellent. Turned up on-time, excellent CV19 protocols, fitted quickly and  professionally. No hassle whatsoever.

You can usually expect to pay a little more for the convenience of having your tyres fitted at home or office but that’s not always the case. It depends on the tyre and they often have good discounts/promotions for certain brands;..for example, if I order two Goodyear F1 tyres (for my car) Asda would charge me £248 to have them fitted at a local garage of my choice.

However, I can have the same tyres fully fitted at home by TyresOnTheDrive for £237 at the moment.

Given the  current situation and also that I’ve spent far too many hours sitting in dingy, draughty and freezing cold garage waiting areas it makes the choice of home fitting a no-brainer atm,...for me anyway.

Mobile fitting may not be for you, but it might be worth having a quick look
