Yorkshire Energy switch to Scottish Power...

Options
I’m a former Yorkshire customer. We’ve all been switched to Scottish Power’s Energy Exclusive tariff which is SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive so I recommend that everyone switch.  Here are the comparisons:
YE electricity - 17.421p per day plus 12.442 per kWh
Scottish Power: 21.76 p per day plus 16.115p per kWh

YE gas: 8.471p per day plus 2.43p per kWh
Scottish Power: 23.33p per day plus 2.701p per kWh

So if you don’t switch, you’ll see you electric bill go up by 25%+ and gas by 175%+!!!!!!!!

Try reading https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6220161/yorkshire-energy it's full of people with similar comments, people's experiences, what they've done, how and when they've changed supplier (as well as some erroneous advice in places!).

  • Just got an account number and password through from Scottish Power, Submitted latest meter readings, then got on to Scottish Power to see when my bill would be calculated and  the money I have in credit (£380) will be transferred from Y/E. Told he following; Problems with calculating your bill due to back office problems, keep checking the internet, The money from Y/E could take up to 3 months while the receivers sort it out. Really feel Ofgem have let us down, you cannot get in touch wit them, When you dial the number you get put through to Citizen's Advice. I feel we are all paying the cost for this as Gas wholesale prices are increasing day by day and unable to switch, If Martin see this please feel free to comment.
  • Even though I was £346 in credit, YE took a further DD of £140 after they ceased trading. Got that back after applying to my bank under the DD Mandate but still owed £346. Getting nowhere so put in a complaint via Resolver against SP and YE asking for my credit balance now and also the difference between the rate SP have put me on and the best rate on the market on 14 days after SP took over responsibility for my account . My point is, my account should have been transferred within 2 weeks (why not), and at that point I should have been able to search the market and switch to the cheapest deal. As those deals are no longer available, SP has cost me hundreds of pounds due to their delays. I don't think I will get it but its worth a try.
Like others, I feel badly let down by Scottish Power and Ofgem, I am left in limbo until they sort this out.

Even normal switches take longer than 2 weeks, and that's without waiting for information from a company in administration.

Credit balances are going to take a while yet.  Yorkshire Energy need to generate final bills for their 74,000 customer's and then pass details of credit balances to Scottish Power who will need to reconcile them and apply the to accounts.

You're free to start a switch a way from Scottish Power, many already have done.  As long as the "Who is my supplier" sites show SP as your provider you can switch away.

I guess Ofgem could have given people a choice...either you can transfer under SOLR at the rates that the chosen supplier is prepared to offer and still have your gas and electric or you're free to switch straight away but whilst you wait the 2-3 weeks for the switch to compete nobody is going to supply you.   Ummm that would go down a storm politically.

The SOLR process clearly has a few flaws but at least the lights stay on.  It's the risk we all took when signing up for a cheap tariff with a small provider.

Exactly this. The tariffs we agreed to were a contract with Yorkshire Energy. That contract is null and void at the point they enter administration. Nobody has a right to those rates with any other provider.

The SoLR process is to guarantee continued provision of these essential services. It's far from perfect but it is what it is.
  • Does anyone know what criteria Ofgem uses to assign a SOLR to switch to?
Scottish Power were rated one of the worst energy suppliers in the country in the latest 'Which' report. Their rates are expensive and they score badly on customer service. Yes, we can all eventually switch to a better supplier, but if we can find one, you would think that Ofgem could have.

Supplier of Last Resort: Revised Guidance 2016 | Ofgem

20160631 - draft Guidance on supplier of last resort and energy supply (FINAL)GB10062016 (ofgem.gov.uk)  Page 17

Bottom line is, they look for volunteers first.

Have spoken to Ofgem, whilst a supplier has 15 working days to effect a "normal" switch there is no timescale when a company ceases trading. So there is the problem folks! It's about time that Ofgem sorted this issue out and set a timescale, otherwise unscrupulous companies like SP will continue to do this, and have no incentive to effect a quick transfer and can make money out of us trapped customers for as long as they like without any sanctions - disgraceful!  As for trying to switch away from them before your a/c is set up by SP, you will find as I have that SP go behind your back without telling you and get you new provider to switch you back to them - unbelievable eh?  So we are trapped on a higher tariff and interestingly one that has a much higher standard daily rate - so again yet another incentive for SP to drag their feet.  We need help, as you all the ex-Tonik Energy customers who are just ahead of us with a similar situation with SP.  It would be good if martin Lewis could take this issue up as there are issues to sort out with both SP and Ofgem itself.
  • Yes I suspect most ex YE customers are in a hard place at the moment.  Now, about 7 weeks since YE went bust am still trying to get my Scottish power account opened so that I can find a supplier of my own choice. This situation is very bad for my blood pressure.  Scottish Power are certainly not the cheapest choice, also they wan a mandatory “smart”metre.  I have absolutely no intention of staying with SP after my previous experience with them.  To cut a long story short it took 2 years and a complaint to OFGEM to get a refund I was due so I really can’t afford to have another direct debit account with them. I have been happy in the past to pay monthly DD to build up credit during the summer months for the expensive winter period but it  now turns out to have been a bad mistake—— I am in credit for over £600 to YE , a bankrupt company, and to think that OFGEM and Scottish Power have been advising YE customers not to cancel direct debits.  DO not take this advice.  I am loosing money every day that this goes on and there doesn’t seem to be much I can do about it except keep trying to get another supplier to accept me but without an existing and operating account I won’t be accepted.
