I have seen them picking in ASDA. If there is none on the shelf when the person is picking the order then they don't get included.
They don't go looking for them.
If they appear on the shelf after the picker has passed it makes no difference. They weren't there at the time.
I have noticed people panic buy when they see an empty space on a shelf- need to buy in case there is none left. But of course they are the reason the shop runs  out of it.

Can't remember which supermarket it was but a delivery driver told us the substitutions are set rather than the picker's choice so if you order x there might be 3 things they can substitute with and if they aren't there either then it goes down as unavailable, possibly plenty of loo roll on the shelves but not what they are told to put in the order instead.

I guess everyone has their own idea of what they consider acceptable :) Our shop is only allowing single bag purchases of toilet roll because of the shortages. Doing a second shop to get around that just feels very wrong to me, but everyone has different things they will or will not do!
    Nobody’s suggested a ‘second shop’ 🤷🏻‍♀️
Simply planning ahead for a foreseeable event (also known in some places as common sense) - it’s been 10 months since the first lockdown and everyone has been aware that they might be in a position where they and there household might need to self isolate.  Assuming that you can get a shopping delivery during that time and that everything you need will be available is short sighted IMO.

I order a years supply at a time from Internet.  Not having to bother the shops and not going to run out.

I think you've made your position clear! I think I've also been clear that buying more supplies than I need / than normal is something I won't be doing as I consider it immoral. Everyone is going to be different about what they consider the right thing to do in a totally new situation, and that's ok :)

These explanations make a lot of sense, thanks!

Glad you got it sorted. My suggestion was going to be a post on your local Facebook group to see if someone would go and buy you some.

A friend used to do shelf stacking and said that when they were picking orders, they did it once the store had shut or during the night at the same time shelf stacking happened. That meant that often there were gaps in the shelves that hadn't been refilled yet so it was often difficult to substitute. I imagine when your order was picked they just hadn't got round to re-stocking that bit yet, and customers had been doing some panic buying so depleted the current stock, so hence nothing to substitute.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Do you know a friend who is a Costco member? There's one in Bristol and it's rammed with toilet paper. Excellent quality too, I think 56 rolls per pack.

Having a stock cupboard with one extra is not over buying.
That is what I was brought up with.
One  extra in the cupboard to be replaced when used.

Do you only put enough fuel in the car to get you there and back each time you go out?
Or do you fill up the tank so have enough to do you for few journeys?

That was exactly what I was going to say.  Sadly most people have no idea how internet orders work with in a supermarket. I remember reading someone on this forum who could not understand why if they ordered two weeks ago when their order was being picked that there were none in stock.  I got the feeling they thought that once the order went through someone went down and picked it off the shelf to put in safe keeping just for them.
As you say deliveries come in all during the night and it gets on the shelf when it does.  The picker does not have the time to go looking.  And if you went in when the store opened at 8am then yes there could be lots of toilet roll.  Seems people are unable to understand the reason behind somethings.
Mind you at the start of the 1st lockdown while waiting at a till I was chatting to a lady in front of me and she said I am buying face tissues as can't get toilet roll.  I told her she can't flush them she looked at me strangely.  I said you will have to bag and bin it.  Her face was a picture and that was a woman who was in her mid 30's!!!! who didn't have a clue.
    Yours
