Why are coffee shops for takeaways open this lockdown?

  • I've not used any of take away coffee places, but then I rarely use them in normal times.
I don't have a problem with them being open, most are just trying to ensure they have a business in 6/12 months time.
If I were to use one then I'd pick an independent over a chain, I'm not overly sold on Costa offering half price meals and drinks Monday to Wednesday as it will take business away from possibly struggling cafe's
Costa has a lot of employees too.
They do and local employees too, so I do see where my argument falls down, but I'd still choose to put my money into the independent shop.

In general I probably would too, however there aren’t the independents near where I work. I’m not a huge fan of Costa coffee - prefer Nero’s but I’m happy to put my money into anywhere if the coffee is good. Big companies do have more ability to soak up losses than smaller independents.

We are the opposite and have a good number of independent places nearby and very few chains without going 7 miles or so which is where are where the nearest supermarkets are.
The biggest queue at the nearest town is always for Greggs

Some 45,000 fines have been issued for non compliance. Suggests that the real problem lies elsewhere than a small business trying to make a living still in these difficult times.
The coffee shop I drive past to go to work is a chain. There was a independent cafe which closed down last year - the 2nd lockdown killed it then went to T3 meaning they couldn't offer sit down drinks and meals. Didn't reopen for takeaways in early Dec. Another cafe is closed, Whilst another inde cafe is only doing orders placed on the FB group/messenger

Greggs is great for workers out on the road, because the coffee is perfectly functional but much much cheaper than the coffee chains and most independent cafes.

I much agree with you.   I get a costa every week after the weekly shop.  It is directly opposite the supermarket.  It is just something nice to drink on the 25 minute journey home.  Especially in the cold weather.    If it was an independent then I would use that.  I would use pretty much anyone apart from Starbucks.

There was an article in the paper a week or two back about police officers outside Tesco doing that and the police apologised as they shouldn't have been.

Simply don’t understand why on earth do a whole family of two adults plus four children need to shop together. Saw a security guard outside Sainsbury’s explaining it’s one person per shop. The dad kicked off saying he has rights to take the family with him. Erm no. Did he do this during the early days of the first lockdown?

That does seem a little bit of a daft use of police resources.
