Why are coffee shops for takeaways open this lockdown?

  • There are lots of places that are far from essential that are still open. Schools are supposed to be for the children of "critical workers" and the vulnerable only, but depending on the area 30-60% of children are attending. People are supposed to be wearing masks, but a good 20%+ of people claim some made up exemption that means that they do not have to wear one, when there should be no exemptions. Exemptions for collective worship. Around 20% of those wearing masks are unable to wear them properly, tucking them under their nose. Food shopping is supposed to be a solitary activity, yet whole families (with two adults) are often seen in supermarkets. There is supposed to be no household mixing apart from support and childcare bubbles, but many households are still mixing regularly, both inside and outside.

A takeaway coffee shop can operate just as safely as a takeaway food shop, if the latter is allowed to operate then so should the former, or they should both be closed. Also before we look increasing restrictions we need to tackle the failure to comply with the current restrictions. I would estimate around 20-30% of people are failing to comply with the existing restrictions, so imposing further restrictions on the 70-80% of those already in compliance does not make sense, deal with those who fail to follow the current rules first.
How? How would you deal with them? Knock at their doors and demand proof of residence? Handcuff them and haul them off to prison?

It's all quite pointless. Heaven alone knows what the bleep's going to happen to us all.

I drive past a coffee shop which part of a chain on the way to work. Always a queue outside as inside probably limited to 2-3 customers. Coffee shops aren’t essential IMO. As it defeats the object of staying in your home when possible. Around the shop, there is a small supermarket, chemist and a couple of banks. The other retail units are either closed as non essential (card shop, barbers etc) or empty.

Why are coffee shops open? Everyone I discussed this says the same
Coffee shops are open as they sell food and drinks, and us essential workers really do appreciate food during our working day. Not everyone can sit at home!

As an essential worker myself, do what I do, make a sandwich etc at home and take it to work with you.

Although some key workers are out on the road all day for very long shifts, so being able to get a fresh hot drink/hot food etc. is very useful for them.

How did they cope during the first lockdown when these places were closed? Even toilets in service stations were closed! Hence if you do litter picking or wombling you will see loads of bottles full of urine. Friend does the litter picking quite often and calls the bottles of urine as "Drivers Tizer"

Knowing quite a few of them, they struggled!  The ones I knew had to use toilets in patient's houses which is usually frowned upon, they're mostly woman so the bottle option is not so easy!

I had to pee in layby's travelling between people's homes in the social care sector.  Perhaps some could have stayed open for us if every other numpty who possibly could stayed at home rather than travelling to wales for a sight seeing holiday

Some 45,000 fines have been issued for non compliance. Suggests that the real problem lies elsewhere than a small business trying to make a living still in these difficult times.

Well they didn’t because there was no option. Now there is so they use them.

I don’t have a problem with coffee shops being open. I travel into London every so often and it’s nice to get a decent coffee although I could easily do without it. They aren’t usually too busy and people practice social distancing. There are screens at the counter so they are taking precautions.

Lots of things aren’t essential. Football clubs don’t need to play but they are allowed (though they’ve come under criticism for poor social distancing many times), garden centres, churches etc. But in the grand scheme of things I doubt it makes much difference to the overall rates. If it helps people to get through life at present with only a tiny cost then it’s probably worth it. Same with the other things that are open.
  • I've not used any of take away coffee places, but then I rarely use them in normal times.
I don't have a problem with them being open, most are just trying to ensure they have a business in 6/12 months time.
If I were to use one then I'd pick an independent over a chain, I'm not overly sold on Costa offering half price meals and drinks Monday to Wednesday as it will take business away from possibly struggling cafe's
