Just spent a while (too long!) reading through some of this thread and am very enthused. Need to go shopping for flannels!
Has anyone thought of using corrugated scalloped border strips (they are called bordette) instead of cake cases? I am thinking about the kind that are used in schools as a border around display boards.

It comes in many colours, patterns and edge-shapes, including a nice white icicle one - good for Christmas. As you can cut your own length, it would seem to get around the problem of double-flannel cakes being too fat for the cake cases.
A roll of single colour corrugated scalloped edge stuff costs £2.75 for a 15m roll which is 57mm high (just over 2 inches). I would think that 20cm would be enough for one 'cake', (taped into a circle on the inside with sticky tape), which would make 75 from one roll (3.7p each).
The printed scalloped rolls are £3.50 for 12 x 1m strips (= 60 cakes!)

Delivery appears to be free over £30, but can't find out what it is for smaller orders at the moment.
Edit: just found it by adding something to the basket. Delivery to UK is £2.95.0 -

The brown ones are paper. I don't normally struggle with the 2 flannels. I did a tutorial on the best way to fold to do a double one which rosekitten put on the first post of this thread. However i did manage to rip a few the other morning when trying to make up a couple but that was because I wasn't awake enough lol.
My cases have all been swapped now. Thanks to ChazzyI have some nice pretty red strawberry ones coming :j

jap200...what a good idea if they are tall enough, i did buy some coloured printed card the other day and I cut it with pinking shears but it didn't look very good, these borders will look good I think.0

OK - now trying to add photos, this is the first time I've done this so fingers crossed:
Range of plain corrugated borders
Scalloped holly border
snow flurries border
Straight edge under the sea border
This is just a small selection of ones I like - there are many, many more. Haven't found any good 'foodie' ones yet though exept for 'healthy eating' images - not exactly ideal for the cakes!0 -
I ordered the holly one...good for red or white xmas flannels I thought with a sprig of holly on top0
