Students aren't being "punished" any more than many other sections of society. We have a global pandemic, the impact and costs of which will be borne by everyone for many years. It's simply not realistic to think that any one section of society shouldn't shoulder some of that burden and incur some of that cost. If you got your wish and students' tuition fees were reduced or waived, and accommodation contracts were ripped up, who do you think bears the cost of that? No one? Or the thousands of people employed at universities, the cleaners, catering staff, landlords and teaching staff, some of whom have been responsible for creating the vaccines that will get us out of this mess, and many of whom would find their jobs at risk?Lightning360 said:
Both the unis and the government are at fault. It should not be students being punished for this.sammyjammy said:@Lightning360 Make your mind up is it the governments fault or the Universities? Or is it just everyone's but the students?
This is the new normal for millions of pupils and students. I do feel sorry for students who are not getting the full "experience" their predecessors have, but I'm equally confident that the current generation of schoolchildren, college and university students will adapt and learn new skills and behaviours that are necessary in these circumstances. In a few years' time, when I am interviewing these young people for their first jobs, they will have interesting stories to tell about how they adapted to learning in a pandemic, how they juggled homeworking with study, how they lived almost exclusively online, how they were perhaps the first generation to be genuinely paper-free, etc. I suspect that although they may end up with a different academic skillset (e.g. science graduates may not have had as much lab time as they might have had), they will be more resilient, more adaptable and more interesting applicants as a result of these difficult years.

Rather than moaning on here, what are you doing to help things? Are you lobbying your MP, petitioning, campaigning with placards?Lightning360 said:
And this is the most selfish response yet.Barny1979 said:Everyone is being punished due to Covid, life is unfair.
It's essentially "I have to suffer so those students have to as well".
People are being punished due to Covid, but a lot of people are getting support. Not students though.2 -
I think this entire thread is proof as to why students aren't getting refunds - no one actually understands, or frankly cares, what students have been put through this year.
Once you bother to research the state of the university sector this year and how students have been treated, feel free to respond (and if you still think they have been treated no worse than anyone else, then you clearly don't care).0 -
Now you're just being silly. A classic case of putting out a thread for discussion, not liking the answers you're getting and throwing your toys out of the pram.Lightning360 said:I think this entire thread is proof as to why students aren't getting refunds - no one actually understands, or frankly cares, what students have been put through this year.

No, it's a classic case of people responding to a thread when they clearly don't understand the full picture.Aylesbury_Duck said:

Given that you're after only informed views from people well-versed in the higher education sector and its intricacies, perhaps posting on a moneysaving forum wasn't the wisest move. Although I am confident that I do understand the HE sector, having worked in it for several years not that long ago, and having two sons studying in it. But you don't like my opinion, anyway.Lightning360 said:

If only there were an education-based forum aimed at students where such discussions could be held. One with room for students, perhaps?4 -
So are you a student?0

I hope not. I have high hopes for this generation, I think they're more impressive than mine. This would be a let-down.Barny1979 said:So are you a student?3 -
My son just completed a full time degree whilst in full time employment - he got a 2:1 and just got made redundantLightning360 said:I think this entire thread is proof as to why students aren't getting refunds - no one actually understands, or frankly cares, what students have been put through this year.

My partner works for a Uni
I work in a patient facing role in the NHS
Please tell me how i don't understand
They have been treated no more fairly or unfairly than anyone else -- its just that they use social media to complain the loudest4 -
Because you're not giving the answer OP was looking for. Informed opinion isn't good enough if it's not the one being looked for.JamoLew said:
