in my circle, men and women still seem to be doing the male/female chores around the house. our friend winges about her husband not taking the bin out on bin night. i said to my husband why can't she just take the damn bins out herself rather than wait for him to do it? i take the bins out at home myself as waiting for my husband to do so would mean we would often miss the bin collection.MovingForwards said:Oh come on, seriously we are about to step into 2021, male / female tasks haven't been a thing for many decades.
I work FT, do the DIY, decorating, financial matters, purchase furniture, accessories and anything else.
My partner works PT, does the domestic side, shopping and puts the bins out too. Even went up the ladder with a paintbrush to do the ceiling 😯
We spoke about it before moving in together, with each 'change' eg new job, different property and just for the sake of checking. I was raised to be independent and taught how to do things as a kid; DIY and maintenance by my mom, a single parent.
I'm not a feminist activist, burn the bra woman either!
If the sister isn't happy then she addresses it with her husband, if there's no change then she weighs up if she even wants to be with him.
i am still seeing the stereo typical division of labour between men and women.

I think in 2020/21 were told that men and women can do the same jobs and do them just as well as each other.
The reality is we are different, always will be, and women can't do certain thing as well as men and men can't do certain things as well as women.0 -
As Molesworth might have said, any fule kno that any fule can put the bins out. However that's DH's job in our house.
However, I defy anyone to say that I wouldn't have made a better job of putting sealant around the plywood patch that's stopping the back door leaking.

i think it also about what men and women like to do or hate the least, which is what is keeping the division of labour separate between the two sexes. preference for different tasks.burlingtonfl6 said:I think in 2020/21 were told that men and women can do the same jobs and do them just as well as each other.

Didn’t Sweden do something with trying to equalise genders in all professions - If I recall it actually had entirely the opposite effect.AskAsk said:

On average -
women prefer doing jobs that deal with people
men prefer doing jobs that deal with things1 -
i find that women prefer doing jobs/chores that are not dirty, whereas men aren't put off by dirt and filth as much. may explain why men don't tend to do the cleaning as they don't mind dirt as much as women!ToxicWomble said:

As others have said, it's probably how OP's sister feels about it is the issue. She said that the marriage appeared 'flat' before so with so little diversion available during lockdown it's become an issue. It could be that the sister is just offloading. OP said she's having a rant by proxy and that could be enough.
My DH isn't interested in money. He knows we have more than enough so feels comfortable leaving the practicalities to me. I'm happy with that. He pulls his weight in so many other ways. We have separate bank accounts so he manages his own for hobbies etc. Then he just transfers anything needed for shared spending. If we're out with friends (remember that? 🤔☹️) and split the bill, he jokes that his equerry will deal with it 🤣
He does take out the bins though. I thought when Teresa May was PM she made it law. 😉2 -
Putting the lockdown blues to one side, I'm reading that she is worried about money (as you mention they may need benefits at some point, which she will have to apply for) and she wants him to listen and take note. He's in denial about that and so is leaving her to sort it. Whether he helps (the fabled LBM) or not, Prime, Netflix and Sky would all either go or be reduced in our house!LBM July 2006. For anyone who actually cares to look at the data, the evidence shows that the differences between men and women's economic life choices actually become greater as countries get richer and more equal opportunity.ToxicWomble said:Didn’t Sweden do something with trying to equalise genders in all professions - If I recall it actually had entirely the opposite effect.
