They have this weird door where you push it, it resists until you've got it about half way and then suddenly an electric door opening mechanism opens it the rest of the way so you can imagine the effect!).
I found a Pyrex cook and freeze dish with a lid, Robert Carrier's Taste of Morocco and Wilma Paterson's Lord Byron's Relish The Regency Cookery Book for £12.47 total.
The book reports that he "frequently breakfasted on a raw egg - usually standing, it is reported." That sounds utterly disgusting to me, I can't bear sloppy whites let alone raw ones.
I think this purchase is going to be worth the £2.49 I paid, simply for the yucks alone.9 -
It sounds fascinating, goldfinches!
My bargain today was an electric Simplicity rotary cutting and embossing machine, for just £5.00. It looks absolutely new and unused, in its original box, with instructions and is PAT tested. It's the same as this one which I have found on sale on A*m*z*n https://www.amazon.co.uk/Simplicity-Cutting-and-Embossing-Machine/dp/B00BJ2OZ22
I think it might be brilliant for cutting nice even strips for quilting etc.10 -
Miró said:Wobbled into the 'weird 20p shop'* in Otley today and there hanging up was a pair of Monsoon white, wideish-legged jeans in my size. Well, I couldn't leave them for 20p could I? Amazingly, upon examining them closely at home they are great quality and, I think unworn. I'm tempted to run the legs in a little to make them slightly less wide-legged which would not be hard as there is no top stitching on the seams but....I'm sure I've read that the slimfit and skinny look is now 'out' for jeans....anyone know? Not that I'm cutting edge in my style but one does like to be reasonably up to date
. Several pairs for sale on EBay....these are they....

@goldfinches Ooooh those cheekbones on Katherine Hepburn
!! The jeans were not wide enough for that style unfortunately...more bootcut. I started to faff about with them and ended up taking them in by about 3/4" tapering from the hip down on each side of the legs. Quite pleased with the look now....more straightleggedy stylee which I like. Wish I was a little more avant-garde in my style at times but I just end up feeling a twit if I attempt it
@General_Grant I had a good squiz at what people were wearing when in town yesterday and yep...skinnies were few and far between. Other than that anything seems to be in though, wide, extra wide, harem, bootcut, bell bottom and all at varying lengths!
@C_J Very envious of the Simplicity cutting an embossing machine....just watched a video of one in action....looked like a lorra lorra fun!

In conversation with my 6yo niece the other day we were talking about the fun things she had planned for the weekend, including a trip to her favourite site on her local high street. I fully expected her to say it was the local ice-cream parlour but to my delight she said "my favourite shop is Barnardos, because you can get a load of good stuff for two pounds".
It seems she has been inducted into the ways of the chaz, and I am so proud of her!No man is worth crawling on this earth.
So much to read, so little time.10 -
A fruitful trip for me today.
Books : The Houseplant Expert (I am not - hence needing the book) £2.99
2 x Christmas themed chick lit type for some gift boxes I make. £1.49 each
A gamers theme cartoon style book for DS 99p
A pair of H&M trousers, reduced from £3.50 to £1.90
a crescent shaped decorative pot/dish in a pale aqua green/blue which I am hoping to use as a planter for a mini succulent plant £2.99
Lovely Mum also called round with her finds of 6 Christmas themed chick lit books so I'm all covered for those total spend there £6Wealth is not measured by currency9 -
@Miró - your trousers sound very stylish to me although I do sympathise/empathise with your feelings when attempting to be avant-garde. I was born with light blue eyes, freckles and mid-brown hair and long ago realised that I was never going to look dramatic but the fact that my sister got the black hair, dark blue eyes and creamy skin still rankles.
Anyway, I called into my favourite BHF shop as I was passing today and pounced on a 10ltr stockpot without a lid that I thought I might have one that would fit at home and then when I got to the till the lovely volunteer rushed off to the store room and produced the right one triumphantly. So here it is for the princely sum of £3.50 and that's one more thing ticked off my wishlist.
You can't see in the photo, although I did try to show it, that the lid has several drops of white with a hint of pink emulsion paint on it so I think someone was using the pot for decorating rather than cooking. I will give it a thorough cleaning before preparing any comestibles in it."She could squeeze a nickel until the buffalo pooped."

@goldfinches. One of my very first chazza finds was a very similar stockpot…in a really grotty state but I took great pleasure in cleaning it up til it looked like new. Has been used continually for soup making, jam & chutney making, pasta cooking etc.etc. Cost me 50p but it was15 years or so ago. Love seeing the pics of all your finds!!8
