Ni idea it it has any basis in truth (it is the Daily Mail after all) but:
Senior royals are accused by the Daily Mail of inadvertently flouting coronavirus regulations at a Christmas attraction in Norfolk. The paper says the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children "mingled" with Prince Edward, his wife and their two children at a themed woodland walk in Sandringham. It is in tier two where the rule of six applies outdoors. Royal sources tell the Mail there was no intention of meeting up as a party of nine and that the two parties had been given "separate consecutive" time slots for the event.

There’s still going to be plenty of people that will ignore the guidance/law anyway and do as they please at Christmas. Already heard in local papers, on the radio and even people talking generally they won’t be adhering to it.
What's changed? There's a significant minority who haven't cared at all in the past months. No reason for them to change their behaviour just because it's Xmas day.
Nothings changed. Just pointing out regardless of the tier there will be plenty who mix throughout Christmas because they think they are above everyone else and deserve the rules to be different for them.
Looking at the number of Londoners with suitcases in the stations just before the restrictions took effect, there may not be enough left to mix.
They'll just mix with all the locals in Cornwall/Cotswolds/Lakes etc and spread it about because they are selfish and have been for a long time thinking it wont affect them/and that the world revolves around London & South East
It's worth noting the first known hospitalisation due to COVID in Europe was discovered to be in a hospital in the Paris area around this time last year.  It was originally misdiagnosed as pneumonia but when the French health system re-examined some cases of suspected pneumonia, they found that COVID case.  Therefore, it's quite possible COVID arrived in London in the Christmas period last year due to people returning from Paris carrying it, without realising.

In Northern Ireland you can pick any day between now and the 27th - not very useful for the OP, and I can't find the comment saying this idea is ridiculous, but it's certainly happening in other parts of the UK.

This is guidance, so, so long as you apply common sense, you are doing the right thing.
Depends where in the UK you live and where your relatives live.  If you live in London and your relative lives in Wales then it's certainly not just guidance and you'd be breaking both UK and local Welsh law by meeting up on Boxing Day.

Nicola Sturgeon breaking her own rules:
Scotland's first minister has apologised for breaching Covid rules by taking her face mask off at a wake.
The Scottish government's Covid regulations say that customers in hospitality venues must wear a face covering except when seated - including when they are entering, exiting and moving around.

In a statement released to the BBC, the first minister said: "Last Friday, while attending a funeral wake, I had my mask off briefly.

"This was a stupid mistake and I'm really sorry. I talk every day about the importance of masks, so I'm not going to offer any excuses.

"I was in the wrong, I'm kicking myself, and I'm sorry."

Given compliance has fallen since the Dominic Cummings saga, if any MPs are caught breaking the regulations at Christmas, the compliance for NYE would just disintegrate.
The Labour MP Rosie Duffield didn't receive the same media atttention at the time. Wonder why?
Maybe because she isn't an aide who was being paid from the public purse to advise the government on how to deal with covid and she wasn't the one pushing for us to enter lockdown or who had a hand in setting those lockdown rules?

ETA: just to clarify, since I know few people seem to have been aware of this but he isn't an MP. He's not even an expert in any field. Boris was using taxpayer money to give his mates jobs, as a reward for jumping on his & goves Brexit bandwagon.

I read it a few months ago but easily found it again by typing in 'First COVID case in France' into Google: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-52526554#:~:text=A patient treated in a,month earlier than previously thought.

When I saw the picture I assumed she’d removed the mask to allow an older person with hearing issues to read her lips, which is allowed, but if that was the case I’m sure she would have said.

Not the worst breach, I can get over that.

It's an oversight, not a blatant two fingers up approach other people have decided to do since March.
