  • Well in the end I haven't done an accurate tally, but I feel happy that overall I have hit my target, although I moved the parameters in the last couple of months of the year. I needed to save a further £1400 to hit my target. I have spent £1000 towards my house move, plus the extra I have paid off my mortgage (accidental £300 overpayment) and the extra pension payments I have been making mean I am happy that I have put that much towards my goals.

Thanks loads to @slowlyfading for all the hard work, and everyone else for keeping me company. :)

    #027 declaring -£1,156 for September.

Finally completed on our new home at the end of September, so expecting some negative months for at least September and October as we gradually sort things out.

Despite a negative figure (cash balances down), its nice to see that overall my grand total (including investments) is holding up.
#027 declaring a much improved £1,220.81 for October!

Have temporarily paused the S&S ISA contributions as I build up a cash buffer for expected works on the house in the near/medium-term future. However all the DDs and over payments have not yet been setup on our joint account, so I'm still yet not sure how well/if our (mine and OHs) contributions to the joint account will sufficiently cover for them all.

Additionally there are a few further bills (like council tax) that we haven't yet even setup despite having lived here for just over a month now, but from what I have read on the council's website we have to wait to receive our first bill...

S&S ISA returned 2.0% over October, and is currently +14.8% YTD vs +16.1% for Vanguard FTSE Global All Cap Acc. My performance is net of all fees (fund manager, trading costs and platform charges) whereas Vanguard is the same except platform charges are excluded (using simple prices from their website).

    Form submitted.  :)
    #027 declaring £818.11 for November.

Spending up this month as we've gradually been buying more things for the house. All S&S ISA/LISA contributions paused for now as still adjusting to new monthly outgoings having recently moved.

Another consideration now is saving up for improvements/renovations to the house that we'd like to do, I'm undecided as to whether I should save up cash and fund it that way, or keep investing and when we're ready to go ahead with the project take out loan and/or sell some investments to fund it? I feel that the easy option is to save as cash to fund it, but I feel that the right thing to do is to continue investing so that if there are any delays at least my cash is working hard. (Please note, emergency cash fund already in place).
#027 declaring £1,496 for December which brings my total to £16,674/£20,000.

Nothing special to note, however I imagine January won't be a good month as that'll be paying off the spending that has occurred in December!

Onwards and upwards to 2022's challenge!

    Form submitted.

Just popped my December form in. I make my total for the year £9,489.12 which is pretty good for a target of £7,500 and for two of us on occupational pensions with hardly any side activity. Just managing the gap and not able to start the building project or the mega trips we had hoped for

#80 reporting £600 for December which brings my total to £10,641.08/£11,000. I already knew in November that I would fall short of my target… the reason is that we have just bought a puppy and have welcomed him into our home and lives just before Christmas!!

Despite not hitting my target, I am only thinking positively! I started my first ever S&S ISA in 2021 and it has seen returns of around 8%! I plan to contribute to this for the next 10-15 years. I would say that I am risk averse. However, I was holding too much in cash. I am comfortable with the dips as my pension has shown me that. I also contributed to my LISA and we have big plans for 2022!

Thanks to MSE for introducing me to what I refer to as sinking funds (such as Christmas & Birthdays) — I’ve always been a good saver but having separate savings for these type of things really helped to make sure I didn’t have to dip into my main savings!

I hope everyone has had a lovely Christmas! Wishing you all a Happy New Year!

  • Hey...number 12 I think. Sorry for the absense.  My almost one year old is the reason. And the reason for the opposite of saving the last few months.

It's been confusing to track finances, as well as having little or no time. It might be simpler for me to just work out how much less I have since my pay went to zero and divide that by the appropriate amount of months.

I'll work something out and report asap.

I'd like to join for next year.
