Audi e-tron & EV surge protection?

From my digging it looks like surge protection is built into some car chargers - big companies like Pod Point include it as standard, they don't seem to specifically state it on their literature but they have confirmed that it's included.
So it possibly looks like the car charger the OP installed wasn't of suitable standard. Would be useful for the OP to confirm what car charger was installed, if that model needs to have a separate surge protection device installed - that would need to be factored into any cost comparison between chargers.0 -
The OP has commented on several details that have been raised - but hasn't denied it was plugged into a normal 13A socket.
The old-shape A3 eTron only had a 3.6kW charger, so there was very little point in plugging it into anything beefier. Why bother installing even a 7kW charger, when a 13A plug won't add much on? 3.6kW is 16A @ 230v, a blue commando socket on a normal ring main.0 -

Though, why have a fast charger for PHEV? Small battery.0 -

Indeed it is a type 1 fast charger, installed under Gov't scheme and hopefully a little bit of a future investment...although experience so far with EVs may put me off!0

Yes, it's a 7kw one, from Rolec.

What leads you to think Pod Point have surge protection? As its not mandatory to fit nor offer...unless at high risk of electrical strikes?0 -

Which specific model is it (as Rolec appear to have a few options) and I'll ask them the same question.0 -
Interesting reading this, as this suggests it's not quite that clear?..
