Further discussions with charger supplier also, seems there is no plan to fit any surge devices in domestic installations and only option is to have new consumer unit installed with it or have specific protection on the charger itself. Something they dont want to offer as it makes the chargers more expensive!
Seems the immediate advice for anyone with an EV is get some surge protection either via a new consumer unit or dedicated SPD!
With a mention of how much the house is worth.0 -
Well I finally got a response from TMO, however their initial response and adjudication is that there is no 'fault' with the car and therefore nothing Audi must do in terms of costs.
Pending my review to determine next steps and options...0 -
1. BMW chargers having RCBO is not surge protection.
2. No one has mentioned Electricity Suppler: was it a supply surge or indirect lightning strike ?
If it affected neighbours as reported earlier then it’s more than likely electric supply.
It’s a bit late but I suggest contact them and see if they ‘act responsibly’ .....

It was indirect lightning strike that caused power surge, they didnt want to know and pushed all claims to house insurance.0

Hi OP - Thank you for coming back to update on this.
Although we had all the comments about surge protection and the basic need that any EV charger is fitted with surge protection (even if it was not needed, the cost to install is low compared to potential damage), would the surge protection have actually protected against a lightning strike?0 -
Yes the surge protection would have protected the car and whole house depending where inline it was installed. That's the part I want to get addressed by the appropriate channels...as the recommendations should be much clearer from an EV pov.0
