Surges don't just happen when there's a lightning strike, so the advice on disconnecting in thunderstorm conditions wouldn't protect the car in all cases.

I have to admit that I had assumed that the cars would have their own surge protection, given how relatively cheap and easy it is to install. Will need to check a few installations that my clients have had recently!

I have an EV and have not thou noght about the need for a power surge protector. But then I don't tend to use them for anything in the house either.

My father-in-law is an electrician and qualified OLEV installer so I will speak to him about this. I will admit, I have been a regular member on the SpeakEV forum for the last 2/3yrs and I have not once come across a thread about the dangers and need for power surge protection with the EV charger....
So he says if the charger was fitted after the 18th edition of the wiring regulations came into force(~2019), then you should go back to the company who fitted the charger and ask them to produce the risk assessment for why a surge protector was not fitted.

If the OP does indeed have an A3 e-Tron, then they were sold new in the UK between 2014 and 2018.

A3 e-tron was the badge on the old-shape A3 PHEV. They had a couple of years with no PHEVs, now they're using the e-tron badge on the bloaty electric softroader.

No it's the older model.. not that it matters much imo. The basic principle here seems to be no surge protection on the car...from contacting other manufacturers it's not just Audi's either.

I have a ups system to protect my server, and other surge protection devices to protect other delicate electronic items, but wouldn't have thought to protect an EV.

I also doubt if the risk assessment under the wiring regs would have picked this up either - I'll pose this question to a couple of professional bodies and charging point companies that I deal with, very interested to know what their response is.

I agree, the problem appears related to the surge protector, and whether the manufacturer required that in documents (in which case, it should be part of the package).

However, it seems the car is newly registered, but may have been in storage for a couple of years.  Could that be a contributory factor in any way?
