Farway said:I still have to acquire compost, so no seed sowing yet. I'm waiting until my CV jab has matured before I really venture into compost land, another week or so should do it, only been eleven days so farEleven days is good. I don't know which shot you had, but that's especially relevant with the Pfizer, which I hear suppresses the immune system for around a week, so isolating for a fortnight seems a wise move. Unfortunately, for the elderly in care homes, that's not an option. In other medical news, I had the root canal stuff I needed a mortgage for done today: 90 minutes worth, complete with a photo and x-ray show at the end.
It was definitely more pain-free than the gouging I've had from my usual lady, but I was somewhat alarmed at one point when I saw smoke emanating from my mouth. Apparently, that was just some stuff they use being heated so that it swells up and fills the canals. Good job; I've not smoked since 1989!
I had a golden hop once.....had to dig up an entire bed to get rid of it when it started to take over the front garden. Did I just have a rogue one or are they all like that; it's roots were everywhere!2 -
I have no idea if the snow has settled on the hills. It was living in a cloud today, dim light and mizzle.Should I want hops they grow wild along a path near here. The smell is lovely when brushed.I've looked at plants in a cheapie store and they;re asking a lot extra for being in a small pot and fancy wrapping. The things are all but dead. So tempted by some of the bulbs but they're already sprouting. It's like a drug but my very new garden is just too sodden to move stuff and too cold to sit and debate what could go where. At some point I'll take some photos and ask advice but at the moment it's just all over growing or rotting in the wet.
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

We have hops growing wild along the river bank here near one of my favourite blackberrying spots, I like to think they're descendants of escapees from the various breweries that used to sit along the water. The smell of them mixed with ripe blackberries in August and September is lovely, makes you think all those weird artisan brewers adding seasonal flavours might be on to something.
Also went to the dentists yesterday, had to stand around in the freezing cold car park waiting to be called in and then the through draught in the room was icy so by the time I got back to the riverside I was numb at the extremities.
Anyway the river had risen alarmingly over the previous 24 hours and was running so fast at lunchtime that it was chuckling through the base of the playing field fence here.5 -

I planted a couple of golden hops two winters ago, to grow over my arbor, having been impressed by seeing them at a local garden centre. So far they are being well-behaved, but in my garden things can be slow to establish, then after a few years suddenly take off - so I may yet live to regret planting another thug in the garden!
The two hops are on one side of the arbor and I have a rambling rose planted on the other (sadly, I can't recall the name and while I got it from David Austin Roses, I don't see it on their website now). Although the rose was planted a couple of years ahead of the hops, the hops reached the apex of the arbor in their second season while it took the rose about four years to achieve the same.3 -
Bit damp but sun's trying to peep out & it's very mildI drove slowly passed Morries today after my essential trip to the Co-op, just checking if compost had appeared, it's normally piled neatly stacked up outside, none there at all and I know there's no room inside for itThat's it, nothing else to reportEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens2

Sunnyish here; I'll send some over. There's a good chance I'll be able to extricate the van from our yard if the wet stuff holds off. I have 34 bags of cement in it that need to be up here at the house and I don't fancy barrowing them 100m up the hill!1
