We had picturesque snow here today which is better than rain. Lots of people out walking the moor paths smiling because at least its something different from rain and you can walk in it.
I've had to sludge round the garden compacting the soil more than ever with high winds last night a couple of my standard lavenders which are still big fluffy and proving flowers weren't coping well. Something to be sorted when it warms up a tad.
Mostly doing work on the wrought iron gate pre painting, painting an old small table for my summer reading spot.
Snowdrops are out, they're from the wild legitimately and doesn't quite make up for not being able to go to Snowdrop Valley this year again but it's a little reminder.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

It was still drizzling, but we put the last panel in. :) Will adjust them, finalise height of posts and add post caps etc another day (month!)

Next week, it's concreting the conservatory floor.....possibly. :#
Looks fabulous Dave, and I see you had a helper. What are you planning to grow up it?

That's the Building Inspector. Arrives around dusk to see what I've been up to, but feedback tends to be deposited quietly nearby, rather than given overtly. :|
We will grow pyracantha on the grass/hedge side, and  probably  trachelospermum jasminoides too. The enclosed part is to be a herb garden, so we may ring the changes with various annual climbers within. The area dries out, so clematis may struggle there.
(Don't know why the archway looks like it's leaning, as it's definitely upright and the final panel, while not perfectly aligned to the vertical is only 1cm different from top to bottom to allow for a slightly warped post.)

Soggy, wet, cold and more rain here, setting foot outdoors requires being fully wrapped up and stoutly shod so have spent the day cowering indoors reading various columns.
Has anyone ever tried this and does it work?

Sounds quite good fun but am wary of rushing in without verification.

It does sound interesting. No idea if it works but it is mentioned on the RHS site

A dullish day here, dry but freezing cold. I had to break the ice twice on the hens water and it's undercover. I did saw up two logs which kept me warm and then did the garden bird watch at 2pm.

I was pleased to find 3 out of 5 carnation pipings had taken from a bunch mum bought before Christmas. They were inside a plastic bag and I'd completely forgotten them until the cat knocked them onto the floor last night. They're a big leggy but have good roots

Dave I was surprised to see it. It was just wet coming down by the sea but the hills and moors at the back of the place it was coming down in big soft flakes.
I don't like snow, too cold, but it was so nice to see something that wasn't rain and you could get out. Melted here straight away but it will hang around the hills.
That's an exciting project. You coud grow hops up the inside, that's herbal whether you make tea or beer :)

That was my first thought. When I took over my allotment 30+ years ago there were hops all along the farmers field but I never did get time to experiment with them other than picking a few for decoration.

The wind has dropped so I'm hoping for a warmer, dryer day today but also need the wind to dry out the ground. Three roads are still impassable - bottom of the valley - but I can still use the ones I need.

The compost has warmed up nicely in the utility so it's seed planting today

I've always wanted to grow hops but have never really had the space, back in the days when I was driving around working I used to pass the Courage brewery hop fields near Alton, Hants, no longer there except as twee street names  I expect, Fuggle Lane, Goldings Grove or suchlike :s

I still have to acquire compost, so no seed sowing yet. I'm waiting until my CV jab has matured before I really venture into compost land, another week or so should do it, only been eleven days so far
I was thinking of growing some apples from pips last year, even went so far as saving a few pips from a Gala, into fridge for chilling overwinter but I can't find them now. :'(
It was only an experiment, I have done it before and well aware they will not come true, just flummoxed I can't find the saved seeds

Tesco's had compost in last week, right by the door, 2 for £6.
