The issue with the masks with valves is the exhaled air gets forced out into narrow directed jets that make the 2m distancing pointless as the exhalation will travel far in excess of that.
Whilst they are better at protecting the wearer, they are actually putting other people in proximity at risk.
The whole point of wearing a mask/covering  as suggested is to protect other people rather than the wearer

Which I think is where there while scepticism of masks comes from.
If they were actually that essential and effective it would be law to wear one - no ifs no buts.

But that would be disability discrimination, people who genuinely can't wear one would essentially be housebound/banned from loads of places.

A few genuinely exempt people not wearing a mask doesn't really make much difference if the assumption is that nearly everybody else is, a bit like herd immunity!

The biggest problem with this mass mask wearing is that most people haven't had any training on how to use them effectively.  They've got their hands all over them all the time, they shove them in a bag or a pocket in between wears, they use the same one for days or weeks on end without washing, they push them down onto their chin when outside etc.

The people who are abusing the disability discrimination rules to avoid wearing a mask are jeopardising the freedom of those that have genuine reasons. Though their morals are clearly at such a low level that this won't bother them.

It's a difficult one.  Producing official NHS exemption cards would prove costly and take a lot of time to implement.  I'm also not sure it would be as simple as saying everyone with condition x gets one as the severity of the condition combined with other factors may depend whether or not a face covering can be worn without causing complications.

I think patients can probably get a letter from their GP confirming what conditions they have but that's private and confidential information so people shouldn't feel they have to disclose it to people who are not trained to handle sensitive personal information like supermarket staff and ticket inspectors on trains.

Its not even just medical conditions, psychological reasons like people who have been victims of abuse and violence can find it impossible to have something covering their mouth like that.
