Mileage discrepancy

I'd be surprised if a major retailer would clock a car as clearly as that.  Perhaps it had an ECU replacement or dash replacement just before being auctioned, and there was an error in the input of the mileage.
    6/05/15   6 miles (BMW Service)
    16/12/16   97,788 (BMW)
    04/07/17   123,675 (BMW)
    29/11/17   139,547 (BMW)
01/05/18   156,259 (BVRLA which I think is a lease co., so lease car up to this point)
02/08/18   31,156 (VOSA) (When we bought it)

Given OP said it was a P/X to dealer they bought it from. Odd's on it was that person that clocked it given the 3 month delay in the MOT being done.

Is there any service history that'd corroborate the mileage? How worn is everything? Does it look like a 50k car or a 150k car?
Those mileages are huge - 5,146 miles/month between the first 2 mileages, then 3,235/month to the next, 3,968 to the next.

It'd presumably have needed timing belts done, lots of additional services and lots of wear and tear stuff.
Is there any chance that there has been some confusion between vehicles?

What did the service history / HPI look like when you bought it?

The dealership told us when we bought it that it had a full service history but that it was all online. Last week when asked they said they wouldn’t have been able to check the service history for us as it was all held electronically with BMW. This contradicts the dealer’s approved used car guarantee on their website that says all used cars have a full service history check. Car was in great condition. We didn’t suspect anything. No confusion between vehicles. We have checked the chassis and engine numbers on the service history (now we have it from the manufacturer). It was a lease car originally (though of course we didn't know this until last week) which would explain the high mileage. It wasn’t serviced until it had done 97k miles (in Dec ‘16). You’d think it would be serviced much sooner but seemingly it wasn’t, unless lease company did their own servicing which wasn’t recorded in the history. HPI looked fine when we bought it. Except I think it may have been a partial HPI check. Desperately trying to find someone who can confirm if it was. Otherwise surely the mileage discrepancy would have been an glaring issue. This is what the dealer’s HPI looked like when we bought the car. We want to know why mileage is blue not green and why it doesn't say yes/no. Any thoughts on this are appreciated.

    Define "full service history".

Does it mean "a full history of all work ever done to the car, no matter if that's only one oil change in 97k miles"?
Or does it mean "to the very letter of the manufacturer's schedule"?

How it was financed has zero implication to the use or mileage.

As for the HPI check... as Joe Public, a check from HPI themselves is ten quid without mileage check, or twenty with. Or thirty for three full checks in two years. https://hpicheck.com/

Service history as in BMW services. That’s all that exists for this car. Looks like they probably only spent £10 for the HPI. Ideally I need someone to verify it was definitely a partial check, therefore contradicting their used car guarantee.

They will have paid absolutely nowhere near £10 for it.

I don’t think you could really say there is a partial HPI check, there is an HPI check and the mileage check is essentially an add-on. To confuse things, everyone tends to refer to the provenance checks generically as HPI but they could get the data from a number of places including HPI (Experian or MotorCheck, for example).

Anyway that is probably irrelevant as if the dealer group is the one I suspect you are referring to, then it states on their website:

Eligible ... Approved vehicles are protected by a full data check from HPI, one of Britain’s leading car fraud detection and information services agencies. We also undertake a vehicle mileage check investigation to ensure your vehicle’s mileage is accurate and legitimate.

Whether yours was an ‘approved’ car or not, this is the level of check the dealer group will be purchasing from HPI.

Yep and as they didn’t bother checking the mileage maybe it could be seen as negligent misrepresentation.

    So, what does "Eligible" mean?
    What does "Approved" mean?

@bazzyb took that from one of the dealer’s other websites, and who knows that the definitions are. The part of the group we bought from doesn’t use Eligible, but does use Approved. I think Approved applies to all their cars and is used as a general term. It says things like:
Ironically they’ve given me zero peace of mind.

While this is stressful enough, I do think that the size of the dealership group you said it was will work in your favour as they have a reputation to protect and also financial muscle to make it right.
Did you get the car back from WBAC yet?
Do keep us posted on the outcome.

Thank you so much, your help has been much appreciated. Not yet, apparently its 200 miles away and may take several more days to be returned. We’ve insured it again as it’s making us nervous. I will keep you updated.

can you really tell between a 50000 miler and a 150000miler.
My focus has done 120000 from new in 4 years. the drivers seat is like new and it drives the same now as it did when new. the steering wheel is a little shiny but not obvious, pedals look ok and if the chips where sorted on the front I dont think anyone would know if it was clocked.
OP I hope you get it sorted
