    Mileage check - None.

    That's the problem, right there.

So that means “we didn't bother checking” as opposed to “we checked and discrepancies were ‘none’”?

This is the dealer’s HPI check. They said this is ‘clear’ but it looks like a partial check to me. Ive cropped it so it doesn’t show the car’s details. Any thoughts please? Did they check the mileage history?
This is open to different interpretations.
Adrian has read the line "Mileage Check - None" as meaning the mileage check was not carried out.
The alternative reading would be that the mileage check was carried out and the "None" means no concerns identified.
If Adrian's interpretation is correct (and he is normally correct), it would mean that no checks were carried out for finance, theft, or any of the other rows.  That seems entirely illogical.  Maybe these are simply the "detail" rows to the headings above?

Each of the greens rows with "None" are listed at the top, where the cells are all green other than VIN Match and Mileage Discrepancy which are both in blue.  Why are these two different?  Why does the "Mileage Discrepancy" have a blank grey cell rather than an entry "Yes" or "No" like every other item?  Has the garage 'doctored' this after the event?

I have tried to look online and the report format does not match the example on the HPI website.  This could be because the format has been updated in the past 2 years, or maybe the report is from a different service provider.  Can the OP check online whether there is any explanation / example available for the company that did the check, or is there a section of "explanatory notes" in the full report.

Sadly, at the moment, the all green report is unclear, but a lay person would certainly just see all green as "all OK".

I have searched online for examples of dealers’ HPI checks (can’t find any), I’ve asked my friends if anyone knows anyone who works in a car dealership  who can clarify (they don’t) and last week I phoned HPI to ask how two checks for the same car could conflict, and they said “could be the dealer did a partial check”. We asked the dealer why the mileage was in a different colour and they said “it does that if there are no discrepancies to pick up”.

Together with the blank cell after "Mileage Discrepancy", I would say - yes.

I presume you didn't do your own HPI when you bought it. Have you since...?

If it shows blue for "no discrepancies" on the mileage field, what does the green on all the other fields mean?

We didn’t do a HPI when we purchased, as we totally trusted the dealer. This is from their website:
Did our own HPI last week:
Obviously looks totally different to the dealers check! And goes against the promises on their website. Blue line shows what we thought it was, orange is the reality, verified by the BMW service history we’ve now managed to get hold of. Dealership have seen our HPI and are still saying “well our checks were clear so not our issue”. This is a very large reputable company! I want to know if we have a case to challenge them.

I wish a knew someone who worked in a dealership who could clarify this.

There are people here that do.

    An excellent summation G_c

Does a ‘Blue’ background indicate a warning, or caveat of some description?

Is  the blank Mileage Discrepancy  box (the only one out of 12) indicative of deliberate obfuscation?;...given what we already know, the cynic in me would say probably ‘yes’,... however, I’m perhaps being  extremely unfair as I’m not armed with all the facts.

A full and complete explanation of the significance of that blank box has got to be worth pursuing.
