Anyway a lot of pubs, especially independent ones, really struggle. I've got friends who have been in the trade and they don't live the life of Riley. You cost them money being there: you absorb heat and take advantage of the lights, you cause the staff to work and expect your glasses and ashtrays to be cleared and washed, you flush the toilets and use the soap (hopefully) and paper towels. Complaining about having to pay a couple of quid for the privilege doesn't seem right, somehow. If you really can't afford it then fine but if you aren't in such an unfortunate position, please do the decent thing and actually buy a proper drink. Faux-asceticism doesn't really belong in a public house; it's a place to make merry, or at least should be. Tap water? Soda water? Pah. The landlord/lady is paying for you to be there at that point, which isn't fair.
Amaretto, Archer's and that sort of thing are low alcohol so I'll have one of those to show willing if I'm having a night of not drinking. Otherwise I'll have Diet Coke or fruit juice or similar. If I am drinking then all bets are off; vodka usually, gin, alcopops, shots, Sambuca etc. It's a win win, get drunk and help your local community.0 -
Soda water and lime depending on the pub will just charge for the lime...so can be around 40p0

Agree in general there's Money Saving and there's miserable self deprivation, but there are also unjustifiable £7 pints in provincial locations.
In pure VFM terms the cheapest drink I ever bought was a brandy in a small hotel in Livigno, Italy, which cost EUR3.00 but as it's a tax haven the barman/owner wasn't fussy about measuring and poured me about half a pint.0 -
I usually have sparkling mineral water with ice and lemon. Not because of the cost but because I like it. It’s usually fairly cheap.
when we go to our favourite carvery we ask for tap water, no issue with it. We usually stay for tea/ coffee which is a bit pricy0 -
Back in the day when I used to work the odd bar shift, it always used to be that a punter could order tap water for free - think it may have even been a condition of the publican's licence, but not sure. Is it not the same anymore?
