We tend to buy cars that are about 18 months old and then run them until they die. The Hyundai was just under 3 years old when we bought it. It was probably the oldest that we have bought a car. It is just over 5 years old now and will be paid for in a couple of months. We plan to run it for at least another 4.5-5 years until the motorhome loan is paid off and the house is remortgaged again.

We are not bothered about having a new car on the drive. We just need something that is reliable and economical given the miles that it is expected to do.

My sleep is still not right, hasn’t been for years with me !!!!!! it up with drugs but I still don’t sleep right. Know today is a get through type day, these type of days the addiction still thinks it’s got a look in. 8.15am I was thinking about it get through day etc fml luckily it’s not concerning me that much, I did the guided meditation puts things in perspective and stops the stupid well two staff going out tonight bet they’ll get some and you’re missing out type thoughts. Not !!!!!! missing out on anything apart from upsetting my family, feeling !!!!!! terrible and more money to pay off credit cards. Can’t say I’m too pleased with the big drinker rn tbf either I’ve given him a lot of chances and offers of help since he split up with his wife and all I get is him either trying to get me to join him on a night out or telling me I was better using than I am off it, I’ve become self righteous etc. yeah know I’ve been like that and it’s part of justifying how you’ve become to yourself. Just incredibly sad really.

Re cars I kept my Range Rover Sport from new to just under 9 years. Sure I’ve said before on here I like buying my cars new especially main cars - know where they’ve been and how they’ve been looked and any damage is your own rather than someone else’s. I get there’s a saving - certainly so if buying cash, if bought older. I stand by that I’m not about becoming ultra frugal - that way of life isn’t for me and isn’t what I’m aiming for. Tbf if I wasn’t bothered about paying the balloon off either was happy to refinance or buy another car and keep on the merry go round it would be less of a financial burden.

I wouldn't be so sure about that!!

You would not believe the amount of brand new unregistered cars the garage where the other works end up repairing. One brand new Jag was repaired three times before it left the forecourt  :/

@RelievedSheff that’s absolutely shocking re the Jag. You’ve just made me even more paranoid now ha.

@efes_shareholder I like those teas too, often take a cup to bed but shouldn’t sit on my iPad with it. Know I do need to become more strict with the devices again really.

Our car is from 1998 and has just got through the MOT with no advisories for the 5th year running. The tester who always does it commented we had a good one. :)

We once lived within sight  a garage where we bought a car but hadnt picked it up and caught a mechanic ragging it round the car park that was between us and the garage. DH was in their office very quickly the following morning - dont think the mechanic lasted long but then neither did the car as he hated it so changed it very quickly for something else.

We were considering changing DHs car this year as it is now 9 years old although mileage not too bad on it.  Our local garage who normally source our cars for us though tell us the price of used cars of the make/model DH wants are ridiculously priced at the moment and best hold off. He wants one about a year old and top spec but not many around.  I will replace mine in 3 years time probably for a new hybrid/electric one.

Sorry you still struggling with sleep.

We usually buy new or nearly new and keep until say 7-10y old. This keep us down to one car at once on finance.

We're probably going to look at electric over the next year or two but are in no rush as mileage has much reduced over last couple of years, me through no commuting and boys becomeing mobile and OH with part use of the little van although it didn't like the slushy ice on our hill this week. He also informed me that he was now up to 3 personal contacts making him serious offers for the BMW as well.

We did look at trading the Hyundai in rather than fixing it and getting something a few years newer. The price difference would have been about £12-15k for something similar so we have decided to stick with what we have got.

It's paid for next month so don't see the point in starting yet another HP loan so soon afterwards.

We should get another 5 years from it easily.
