Yes, that's what I thought too, but it seemed strange to get the same answer from 2 branches. I wondered if there had been a change in company policy. I live in Spain and was only in UK for 1 day and was hoping to bring some fresh yeast back on the plane. After reading all the posts on breadmaking and getting fresh yeast I though I'd give it a try. Ah well, just have to wait til next trip over in 18mths!!!
in the meantime I'll stick with packets

Ever asked in your local bakeries?

They might oblige, and you never know until you ask! :)

I wrote to customer services, this was the reply...I'm lost for words!!!!!
Thank you for your email regarding the bakery department no
longer giving away samples of yeast from the Waterlooville
    store.
I can confirm we no longer offer the yeast to our customers
due to health and safety laws. If a customer became ill it
would be hard to trace the ingredients from the product
thank you once again for your email

How many ingredients does Anne Kent from the ASDA Service Team think there are in FRESH YEAST?

    People are SO stupid.

Question: how much do they usually charge you at Tesco/Asda when you ask for fresh yeast? and does it have to be at a certain time of day? Do you have to ask a specific person? Thanks in advance xx

My tesco used to give it away, but now say the same as this asda- it just seems to be this tesco though not a national thing. I have written and await a reply
Sainsburys charged me 16p for 50g which is a bargain, I'm happy to pay- just ask at the bakery section.

I've just come in from Asda amd I had no problem getting the fresh yeast. I'd be curious to know how Anne Kent can justify using it to make bread to sell to customers if they cannot trace it's origin???

    So would I
Perhaps we should ALL ask her...so she can realise that not making live yeast available is not customer friendly
Here's the query number if you contat her '' Response from ASDA (Ref #000000019320282)''
  • Wanted some yeast to build a fly trap with my little boy and went to our local Asda. Spotted the baker and just asked him if they had any yeast and he just bagged some up for us for FREE....
  • You were dreaming. You don't HAVE to sell someone your house or car, just because they want it. Hope you see why that's the law

    ....!

Now I am sure I read somewhere that a bakery/bakers HAD to be able to offer yeast to the public, am I dreaming or is it true?

    Thanks all

I bet its almost certainly due to allergy labelling. Everything has to be labelled for potential allergens, and yeast in a bakery might come into contact with gluten/wheat/dairy, even sesame and nuts. The penalties are steep and can hit local staff and execs.

My local healthfood shop sells it prepackaged in the fridge.
