Curious - what did your seller take or try to sell to you?

    I can see how this would provide an incentive to vendors to leave their house in a reasonable state. But doesn't it also cause problems?

    What happened if it wasn't spotless or something was missing? Does that mean the buyer could simply delay completion? Can the vendor then refuse to clean, giving the buyer an opportunity to pull out of the purchase? 
    Presumably this also requires that everything has been packed the day before completion. So you have to pay for the removal people to have your possessions in their van for longer. Also the inconvenience of having nowhere to eat, relax or sleep the night before you move! (Do people tend to stay with friends or in a hotel in Aus the night before moving?) 
    There is still the possiblity that the vendors could remove things after the inspection. What then? Isn't the sign off the day before just like the fixtures and fittings form months before?
    Also, what if someone is buying a long distance from the house they are selling? Can they do an inspection a long way aware and be around for their own inspection to deal with issues?
  • Interesting because i've just spent £900 on light fittings and blinds to sell the place so it looked pretty.   Do you think I could take these with me or offer them for sale.  Hadn't really considered that before ?

    I'm surprised at the responses you received to this! Yes, you can take them or sell them. But I would advise you to think about the costs and benefits of this. 
    If they really like the fittings they might be prepared to pay £900 for them (the alternative would be for them to go to the effort of buying the same ones and also have to fit them). But more likely they will offer a lot less or decline to buy them. If they were expecting them to be included, then offering them for sale might annoy them, which isn't a good idea. So, I'd probably say if you want to use them in your next house, just don't include them in the fixtures and fittings form. Otherwise probably best to just consider them a cost you incurred to obtain a sale.

    Wow I bought mine off the Housing Association so I lived here anyway. When we moved in 8 years ago it was an empty shell with everything needed doing. 

    What happened with the person left a cat? Did you keep it as your own? That is really sad.

  • Its unfathomable how some people do transactions worth hundreds of thousands of pounds and then spend enormous energy counting pennies!
    Example of people moving in a bungalow but removing stairs carpets, or vendor removing ornate plate with street name etc and leaving holes in wall- actually goes to show pettiness and cheap behaviour. And then there are some buyers expecting wine and champagne to be left by the vendor. 
    I would say to the sellers- take whatever you think you really want or have attachment to. Leave things that you don't want or you think your buyer would enjoy having, just ask for their permission, don't be flytipping in their new home.

    Gave me a good chuckle though, even now when I think of a  Tesco bag for life it does bring back some memories

    I also chuckled at the thread (and read it aloud to my DH) until we moved house, started work on the garden and discovered a dried up pond. Guess what we found underneath the pond (and elsewhere in the garden)? Luckily we didn't find any pet remains but have so far declined to rip up the second patio as we are worried that the previous owner's wife (who, according to the neighbours, just vanished one day) may be secreted there . . .

    Wow, I wouldn’t have thought people would try to sell the contents, I thought you listed them on the contents form and left them, or didn’t!  I would’ve refused to buy anything above the sale price, out of principle.  

    Our vendor said theyd leave the shed, but take the blinds curtains and gas cooker.  They took the shed, but left the fitted blinds and cooker.  They left the lightbulbs, but they were all 40W incandescent ones, so they mostly got replaced anyway!
