Why on earth can they not accept this proof of ID online ??

To compare the ID to the person standing in front of them.........
So how come the last 5 or 6 bank accounts I have opened in the last few years have all been done online ??

Face to face meetings are seen as the best way to verify someone’s identity but it is possible to do it remotely. Different organisations take a different view on what form of identification they need.

Like most banks, TSB were perfectly happy to carry out remote ID verification when I opened my account. Why do they need a personal visit to verify ID now?

I too got this letter, nothing has changed with my personal finances or anything else I can think of, apart from my local branch closed last month, and I aren't going into town any time soon. Maybe the closing of the local branch brought up some misdemeanors?
I will just transfer money out and leave 1p in if they demand I have to go in to prove I haven't changed into a Russian oligarch!

If I do not get a satisfactory response to my complaint, I will vote with my feet and switch my TSB accounts.
Perhaps it is just another ruse to entice me into another discussion to sell me one of their wonderful new financial services?
If TSB do not get a satisfactory response to their request, they are likely to vote with their feet and close your TSB accounts.

At a time personal contact is being discouraged? Unlikely.

Like I would give a fork if they close my accounts?
Did you not realise, that was a joke?

Why not simply close the account if you have no use of it?  Being petty doesn't achieve anything productive.

    Will do, thanks wise one.
  • You can do the ID check online. Login via the mobile app and then at the bottom you see the product icons. Swipe to the far right and select the ID Check icon. You then follow on-screen prompts.

Most the main banks now offer online ID Checking. Barclays even offer video call direct from the app where you can hold your ID up and show the adviser you're talking to!

The days of physically posting in ID to open a bank account are long gone, of course unless there's fraud or genuine missing data available to electronically ID you. Some do it by way of credit report info checks, other do it on main bank account info provided in the application. but it's done online based on the info provided (& available)!
