Tsb Bank wants proof of address and photo id

My husband and I both received letters today from tsb asking for us to provide photo I'd and proof of address within 28 days. It doesn't really explain why or how to do this and family members also with tsb haven't had the same. It seems odd as my account was opened 23 years ago and my husbands 35 years ago so they're not new accounts.
I have been in branch opening accounts for my kids 2 years ago where I had to show my photo I'd and proof of address before I could open them.
Why all of a sudden are they asking for proof of address?

It might just be part of their random KYC procedures, in accordance with their obligations under their licence, or it might relate to recent activities on your account(s). Whatever the reason, you'd be best advised to provide them with the information as soon as possible.

     It doesn't really explain why

Standard anti-money laundering check.  One for ID and one for address.

and family members also with tsb haven't had the same.

Maybe TSB have records from when they were originally done or they passed a routine electronic check -and you didnt.

It seems odd as my account was opened 23 years ago and my husbands 35 years ago so they're not new accounts.

So, they probably cannot locate the information and in your husbands case, they may not have even asked.

Why all of a sudden are they asking for proof of address?

We could list dozens of reasons as to why they cant find the information but it will be due to AML checking.

I have the same letter, demanding that I visit TSB Branch with ID and proof of address within 28 days.
There ought to be an option to provide proof on line.
I am a vulnerable person trying to avoid any non essential exposure. I certainly do not regard a visit to TSB as "essential". It is unclear what will happen if I refuse?
I tried to contact TSB by phone, but after 30 minutes on hold I have gave up.
Perhaps it is time to switch this account?

Indeed. Although there's no guarantee that whoever you switch to won't arbitrarily impose a KYC check at some random date in the future with no explanation.

Strange that UK banks' penchant for random KYC and AML checks evaporates when it comes to Russian oligarchs wanting to deposit millions in UK accounts:

If I do not get a satisfactory response to my complaint, I will vote with my feet and switch my TSB accounts.
I do all of my banking online and have several current accounts. There was no need for me to go to a branch to open any of them.
There are several ways TSB could satisfy their regulatory obligations to verify my ID without insisting I visit a branch. Perhaps it is just another ruse to entice me into another discussion to sell me one of their wonderful new financial services?

If TSB do not get a satisfactory response to their request, they are likely to vote with their feet and close your TSB accounts.

At a time personal contact is being discouraged? Unlikely.

  • I got this letter too, there is no "demand" but a request to provide ID at a TSB branch and if you are not able to do it within 28 days they will remind you again.

If it weren't for the 1.5% interest I would not bother with providing ID and close the account.  I might just wait for the next letter in case TSB reduce the interest rate.

Why on earth can they not accept this proof of ID online ??
A nonsense in this day and age.
Time for a move I would think.
