You don't take them to court.
First of all you check the readings, you check when and how the arrears built up, and you check for mistakes.
How long ago did they tell you you didn't owe anything? Have you checked your meter readings? Have they given you a breakdown of the bill? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.5 -

As well as checking your meter readings, do the meter reference numbers they have put on the letter match the meter reference number of the installed meter?2

I didn't check any numbers or reading numbers before they changed it1

I won't to go to court about thisArch2 -
Unfortunately it's not very clear exactly what has happened; presumably you are being charged for someone else's arrears because they didn't close their account down correctly and pay the final bill. The best thing would be to go book an appointment with Citizens Advice, taking all the relevant documentation with you. They can help you to submit a formal complaint to SSE.4

Have you been ending monthly meter readings? If the bills show readings with E against them they are estimates.BTW, have you signed up to SSE's Priority Services Register?2
