    Send them a meter reading right now.  It will generate a new bill which may be lower.  Then send them a reading every month.
    Post a photo of the meter here if you are unsure how to read it.  Are you on the Priority Services Register?  That will make things easier.

    Click on the link I posted earlier.  Sign up straight away, it gives you all the info.  It's a bit of extra help, not a tariff.

    Your fixed tariff has a horrendously daily charge and expensive kWh rates. It's not clear whether you are now on a prepayment meter, but if not you need to switch to a cheaper SSE tariff until these problems have been sorted out, and then switch to a cheaper supplier.  It's almost certainly worth paying the SSE exit fee.
    However, right now the urgent things are to send both meter readings and to sign up to the Priority Services Register. I'm surprised your Social Worker didn't help you with all this.
