Would you be able to use the grant to install a heat pump and then also claim the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
I know there's limited info at present but with the RHI signup due to run to March 2022 i have calculated off the gov website that i could get a £10k ground heat pump and pay £2.5K and then receive £9.8K over 7 years from RHI
Now that the scheme has been launched I would also be very interested to find out the answer to this question. To put in a heat pump system we would also need to put in something like underfloor heating or at the very least heat pump viable radiators which the £5k wouldn't be close to covering. But if the GHG is in conjunction with or on top of the RHI then it becomes very viable.
No/yes you do get RHI as well but it is used to pay your grant so £10k with £5k grant will mean you would get £9.8k RHI but £5k would pay off the grant which means it’s not really a grant!

  • Thank you arty688
He has never claimed RHI payments or anything else.
I can’t find anywhere on the Government website which deals with replacing a broken heat pump which can’t be mended.
  • There is only one company in Cornwall /Devon doing retrofit insulation on timber framed houses and they have a message saying they've had so many applications they are not accepting any more! I'm so fed up because this is the first time the government have given any help to insulate timber framed houses. We've always been overlooked :-(. I can only hope the government extend the application period or add more people to their list of accepted builders in the South West. We are so limited having to use the Trustmark.

If he hasn’t claimed anything how do they know he has a ASHP? With RHI if say your ASHP breaks after 3 years if you replace you will only get the remaining 4 years.

  • I applied first thing Wednesday morning as it opened. I also did not receive a confirmation email but did get a reference number. Like others the email that I sent to the address on the page bounced back so I emailed the general enquiries and they passed it on to the relevant department. It’s the department for business, energy and industrial strategy if anyone wants to try. enquiries@beis.gov.uk
I haven’t heard anything back yet and it’s very disconcerting not knowing whether or not the application has gone through.

Thanks for that information, if anything changes on my end I'll update here.

The big rather noisy metal box on the outside of his cottage was fitted about 10 years ago before RHI was available. Plumbers declared it ‘unmendable’, defunct, obsolete, a write off two years ago.
it is now a quiet rusting reminder of when his house was once warm. I know it is a ASHP because there it sits in all its dilapidated glory when I walk past it.
All I asked was whether anyone had any ideas where he stood as far as replacing it under this new scheme.

Sorry got the impression from the first post that he had applied but been rejected, if he hasn’t claimed anything and it’s not working it is just a rusty box on the wall and not a form of heating. So I would say he does qualify for it and the plumber is talking nonsense. Although as I have mentioned before this GHG is not a good deal for heat pumps, good for insulation if you can get a quote. Chances are he will get an inflated quote and then miss out on most of his RHI payment.

Finally had a reply from one installer - who work nationally under the laughable name of "Happy Energy Solutions".
Who were, and possibly still are, one of those listed on the SEA site after you make a GHG 'plan'.
    They're not making me happy!
    Complete waste of time.

Thank you for your enquiry. I’m afraid that we are not undertaking any assessments or providing quotations for the Green Homes Grant voucher at this current time.

Given the timescales, and the huge interest in these voucher, we do not have the capacity to assist everyone. Happy Energy Solutions will be contacting households directly where we can make the most impact.

    Apologies for any disappointment.

those I can only imagine what the quotes are going to be like for those who get them with the laws of supply and demand. I would guess most quotes will have the grant added on so I would advise some research and get an idea of how much you would expect a quote to be.
