OK Got the 8Gb replacement and the audio works as soon as I installed Raspian on the (wait for it ) 128Gb card !!
The machine is quick (boots up in less than 5 seconds)
    Anyone want  a "silent" 4Gb Pi ?

Why did you install Raspbian on the new micro SD card when you already have one with it on?
What happens when you use the original micro SD card loaded with Raspbian in the replacement Pi?
That's what a "proper techie" would have done first!
There are many applications using a Pi headless.
Mine is running an apache webserver, along with a mysql database and running php code to control a home made hardware interface board connected to remote temperature sensors and relays to control my heating system conveniently using a mobile, tablet, PC etc. from anywhere.

I've seen nothing in the thread to suggest the original Pi was faulty at all.  The issue of a faulty Raspian issue which can be caused by a failing SD card was mentioned, but conveniently ignored by the OP, in favour of getting a replacement Pi.

I'm in two minds as to whether to take them up on the "does anybody want a silent Pi" thing, because I'm 95% certain if I connect it to a TV it'll work absolutely fine...   And even if I can't get it to play anything I'm sure I can find a use for it.

Of course I tried the original memory card in the new machine and yes it worked.
The reason that I used the new one rather than the old one is - its 128Gb !
The original Pi also does not like the new card - it still remains silent - this does imply that the original Pi is at fault
