The alternative forum started my myself and other mse members a few years ago was largely ignored and now it's there waiting to be used but I doubt it will take off now.
i haven't been on there for ages, though. The lack of both a thanks button and a quote function made it too clunky.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.1 -

Cornucopia said:I had a quick look at one of the PAYG forum sites and the set-up is trivial - probably 5 minutes to create a few boards, users are self-registering with email verification.
The costs are either free with ads, or low-rate ad-free options from $5/month (per site, not per user).
I think the present situation is different from what has been done before, in that people left MSE but MSE still had DT/The Arms, so the community was split and the off-site versions failed. This time we don't have the MSE boards, and in theory MSE should be able to give their blessing, especially on the basis that it could still be loosely affiliated and we'd all come back if they changed their minds.
I'd be happy to admin the site if people are interested in this option.
This is what I was able to set up, just messing around for a few minutes...

JReacher1 said:It was always going to be closed. People can be incredibly petty on this forum and like to report any comment they don’t agree with in the hope that person can then be banned. There is only a small number of admins so it was always going to overwhelm them eventually. I think everyone needs to have a look at what they have reported over the years and think whether it was really necessary? In the years I’ve been on here I’ve only ever reported one comment and that was because the poster was implying they may kill themself. I thought MSE had a responsibility to contact the person to make sure they were ok.2
