..must admit I have heard some horror stories regarding the RAC, not sure what the like of Green Flag are like, and I think they only cover the specific car whereas the AA cover the person regradless of the vehicle they are in?

Simple, on the 1st day when the last 14 days start, give them a call.

What has the agent’s name got to do with anything?
I wonder if the guy's name had been 'Mike Smith', the OP wouldn't have mentioned it..

Good luck with that. They made it so you can't cancel online and the phone line is impossible to get through to.
  • "and I think they only cover the specific car whereas the AA cover the person regradless of the vehicle they are in?"
No, I have RAC cover via Tesco Clubcard and it most definitely is personal cover. i.e. cover in a car whether the driver or a passenger.
Whether it's different if cover is bought direct from the RAC, I've no idea.
  • RAC offer vehicle-based or personal cover. Vehicle is obviously cheaper if you only drive one car and it is not too old to be covered.

If you can't cancel, then phone them up and say you want to suspend your membership, a good reason for suspending membership is if you have breakdown cover bundled with your bank account....
You will still have the remaining days in case you decide to unsuspend it. But if you unsuspend and make a call out too quickly then they will charge you as if you weren't a member.
  • I read up on the Credit Card payment rules around this and called my credit card company to cancel any future requests, but they were 'unable to do it' with the usual agents, and had to pass through to some back end team, and I have not heard from them since. I will give AA another call to see if I get a different answer this time.  I put in a complaint as well but didn't hear anything back on that.
If its AA policy to not respond to renewals/cancellations within 14 days they should put a message on the web site, or update one of the 30 different messages they played to me while I sat on the phone waiting for them to pick it up?. Once they've picked up why don't they just deal with the customer?. If I can get away from them, I won't be going back. I was cancelling because of the cost, I won't be going back because of the customer services.

  • I had an email from the AA at the weekend agreeing to cancel my membership based on the complaint I submitted. At least this saves me having to phone in again. I did find a reference on the web site about a 14 day period for retentions, but it didn't say anything about Cancellations.

"Thank you for your email. It has been logged against the above Service Request Number.
Firstly may I apologise for the delay in our response.
Unfortunately during these difficult times our member Retention Team are only reviewing Memberships that are within 14 days of renewal and you may have spoken to a colleague who was able to cancel a Membership.
We are sorry to learn that you no longer require AA Membership.
However, as requested, I can confirm that your Membership will close at the current expiry date.
If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards"
  • Cancel your direct debit or via your credit card. Job done
