Looking at the renewal statement, it says I had a £62 discount last year (2019), so the quote last year was also £190.  The reason I had a discount being that I had bargained for the renewal to be the same as the price I paid in 2018, i.e. £128.  Which worked.  But I am done with the bargaining.  Yippee, I just realised that I do not have to bargain as I paid by credit card, have no contract and am taking my business elsewhere.

Switch to the RAC or Green Flag via Quidco and save yourself a fortune.

The AA will have kept your CC details & will auto renew your membership, it’s always better to pay the AA & RAC using direct debit. This is much easier to cancel & more visible on your bank statements.
  • Exactly a credit card payment is harder to cancel and can only be done through the AA (I think it is termed CCA for something like Continuous Credit card Authority - basically means they can charge your card as and when they feel like it). You might want to also ask you credit card provider not to make future payments to the AA as well; some offer this facility.

..good thread, I paid £95 last year for the basic service, (includes a "loyalty discount"...ha ha ). So I guess this would be a target to aim for. I am happy to pay a CPI increase to maintain the same cover, (according to my NSI IL bonds this is about 1.5%), and I  have hear that the RAC are pretty crap.....what do you pay?

...yep had my renewal come through today with the inevitable 15%+ increase from last year. Really getting fed up with this "bartering" you have to do every yr...(been a member for 40+ years and every year it's the same battle to get them to reduce the annual  increase to a reasonable amount.
Getting a little fed up with it now, particularly as (I accept due to COVID), they are unable to answer your call.
    May be time to change?

Unless people like you do change they will just keep doing it. We all have to get into the habit of doing a comparison every year to find the best deal.

Cancelling a payment does not cancel a contract.
Oh I love statements like this. First thing I would do is cancel the payment method. They can't get my money then that is all that matters.

The contract is nothing and I can 100% guarantee they won't go to court over it.

Ah, Mohammed Hussain. If it’s the same bloke as I used to work with then it’s entirely typical of him to make things difficult. Dunno if it’s the same bloke though 🤣

Which? Rate the AA significantly higher than the RAC and Green Flag.

For a renewal, they'll just try to take payment, shrug, then cancel the renewal.

For any kind of a recurring payment under an actual contract, this is the most ridiculously bad advice we've had here since the last time Fred piped up.
