How much do you spend on meat?

  • Hi,

My OH was a big meat eater when I met him. A large roast chicken would do his ex-family one meal!! They alot eat a lot of meat, red meat particularly.

Now, I'm not a veggie, I love bacon, roast chicken and my beef, but too much upsets my purse, my conscience and my IBS. So over time I've weaned him down. At Xmas he tried to take himself 5 thick slices of roast beef - needless to say I "adjusted" that!

I've found moving away from meat-centric dishes like a roast means I can reduce the quantity of meat without him noticing too much. So more chilli bulked up with veg and beans; casseroles heavy on the root veg served with mash; pasta sauces where the meat is more a seasoning.

I've found smoked cooking bacon is wonderful for giving a meaty flavour without much actual meat. It also helps give some real body to white meat dishes.

Why don't you post us what you'd eat in a normal week and we can see where you might use leftovers or decrease your meat content?

We eat meat everyday - though this year I am going to try one veg meal a week. I buy whoopsied meat mainly and in bulk every now and again (whole lamb, half a pig, huge bag of chicken thighs).

I eat lots of mince, chicken thighs (from Asian store about £2.50 a kg), pork shoulder, sausages, bacon, gammon/ ham. We used to do a roast every week but with kids activities it tens to be every 2 weeks now

I probably spend about £5 a week if that on meat, but hard to say for certain as I tend to go to the butchers every 4/5 weeks but then sometimes will decide to get some extra sausages for something and pop in in the meantime.
Looking at my meal plans we only eat meat 2 or 3 days a week. I'd happily eat meat every day but I choose higher welfare meat so can't afford to buy as much of it, but this suits our family just fine.

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?
  • Try using chicken thighs rather than breast where you can, they taste so much better and are much cheaper too. If you are a member of Costco they do very good big packs of chicken thighs & other meat
