I guess its just a case of what your priorites are - for me its not buying at the supermarket, local and cost above free range or organic. £15 does seem a lot for what you got I have to say, but if its important to you then perhaps eat fewer meat meals a week?

i woldnt worry about asking for kg or gm unless its joints or mince i would make a meal plan for the month (or perhaps try a week at first) and add up numbers eg if u are having sausage and mash and then sausage and chips later in the week work out number of sausages needed eg 2 per person twice and then ask at the market for 10 pork sausages 6 lamb chops 2 gammon steaks.......as for joints ask to have a look and try and judge the size that way....take home cook and make a note of size and adjust for next time.....iv been cooking for my family for 11 years and still wouldnt have a clue how much weight of our meat needs are....i just count the numbers requires and take it from there good luck
    onwards and upwards

I suppose that it is a question of what you want; do you eat a lot of meat for nutrition or pleasure? Free range and organic meat has the most nutrition in it, so you could eat less of it for the same amount of benefit. If it's just that you want to eat meat most of the time then it's a question of deciding if what you want is justification for the conditions which animal will have to endure to enable you to afford to do that.
If the problem is more to do with what you are familiar with cooking then welcome to OS where you will find loads of ideas for non-meat and minimal meat meals which are delicious, nutritious and filling!

Can we please, just ONCE have a discussion on meat and the price of meat without it turning in to a thread on the merits of free range and organic.

If you can afford it, or you can't but still do it, then well done, good for you, get stuck in, fill yer boots.

Personally I don't even consider paying more for meat than I have to and would love a thread for those of us who want to know where to get cheap meat from, regardless of whether its netto, waitrose, markets or farmers, No bleating about happy lappy chickens, just a thread pointing everyone in the direction of chicken breast, 2 tonne, £5, this way ----> :D

Hi i bought some pork chops from the supermarket value range and it cost £4.52 per Kg so i got 2 nice big chops for £1.91p. mabey you can use this as a guide price for the butchers? If you hae a pen and paper the next time your in the supermarket you could make some notes about how much the mince is per kg ect and compare the price of your butchers. I went to a big meat marketlast year in liverpool and got loads of chicken legs for £20 ( about 20 legs) i found this cheep. 1 more thing my mum goes to a butcher every 3 months and buys 60 chicken legs 3 gammon, 3 pork joints and 6 legs of lamb, because she orders so much she gets a big discount so it could be worth asking. my mum has a chest freezer to store it all so if you were stuck for space this could be a problem. Hope this helps ? Sorry am new at this

    Hi

I am trying to start the Oct GC and am just looking at sourcing my meat, we are a family of four, I have looked at one website and can get the below selection of meats for £75, I just wondered if you could say whether its enough for the month and if its good value?

    2 x 500g steak mince
    8 x pork loin steaks
    8 x lamb steaks
    6 x prime rump steaks
    6 x chicekn supreme fillets
    1 x 1.2 kg chicken roaster
    1 x 800g Pork loin roll
    1 x 600g short back bacon (16 rashers)
    10-12 Homemade pork sausages
10-12 Homemade pork, tomato and basil sausages
10-12 Homemade pork & leak sausages
    10-12 Homemade cumberland sausages
10-12 Homemade lamb & mint sausages
    10-12 Homemade beef sausages

Obviousley there is a lot of sausages there, that would probably do us two or three months.

Is this a good base do you think, for meal planning around, is it good value?

Thanks in advance, I have never really looked at how much we spend on meat before, have always just slung it in the trolley:rolleyes:

£1.56 in September: 1 pack of 8 sausages reduced to half price.

I don't tend to bother with meat. Cooking for one, no freezer, it's pricey, so it's easier just to not bother.
  • We spend £40-£60 per month on meat for 3 of us. Generally buy meat from Ocado and use 15% off vouchers and freeze it all.
