OP, the regulars don't mind being asked questions especially if they are new and/or not available elsewhere.  If you have tried looking at the NEWBIE sticky and cannot find your answer and you've tried searching the forum to see if someone has had the situation before, then by all means ask the question.  BUT I bet you will find it if you search.

Should these challenges be in the first response to the LBC or should the "this is a deficient LBC please send a correct one" letter not be sent first?
No, there is no such advice in the NEWBIES thread.

There was an old 2017 letter that used to bang on about a defective LBC.  Utterly pointless!

Thanks coupon-mad. That advice is in the lbcc fightback thread. As the OP says there is so much to read and take in it's very difficult to see what is no longer relevant.

That LBCCC thread is really ancient!

It's not linked anywhere in the sticky thread still, is it?

C-m, I have just searched the NEWBIE sticky and been unable to find ANY link that goes to a Lazy Daisy thread, no idea where people are getting it from.  However this link: -
    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/75406142#Comment_75406142
..........takes you to a thread about a proper LBC but the image has been removed (presumably by the original poster).
In other news the new statement of truth is there to be read and used by posters, although as you remind posters often, it has not made it to the Dropbox link.
.............. and the link for the RingoGo app is still broken.

What have you learned from the NEWBIES thread post #2 about this stage, and what questions remain unanswered?

newbies thread says I will probably get a court claim, never been to court before, so is that a letter I get from the court saying there is a claim against me? or is it a letter from VCS saying they are commencing court proceedings? and how long does it normally take for that to come through? / how long do VCS have to start court proceedings? or is there no time limit?

They have up to six years to start a claim. A County Court Claim comes from a County Court, or, as is more usual in these claims, from the County Court Business Centre in Northampton.
