So what do you want to happen to make it safe ?
You seem to finding problems but not coming up with any solutions
I work in a hospital mixing with dozens of people a day - am i 100% safe - nope, never will be but its as safe as I can reasonably expect so we get on with it
Not a particular fan of Boris myself, but I cant see Jeremy/Kier having done a better job of this mess

Other countries have done a better job that this current lot - in fact nearly every other country in the world has done a better job handling this mess. Doesn't matter who you support, this lot have been terrible.
Schools are not hospitals, so not fair to compare them. Would you send your 5 year old or 11 year old to run round a hospital with a bunch of other kids all day? No you wouldn't.
It's not the job of minimum wage support staff to sort school safety at schools - it's up to the  politicians, heads, teachers and yes, unions, along with the consensus of the support staff, and the parents. Luckily my kid isn't included in this first proposed intake, but I'd probably opt out sending until I was assured that a 'plan' was there. Remember testing failures, care homes figures being excluded, PPE failures, late lockdown. Who would trust any government who has failed so many tests?
And  again, nobody is asking for 100% safety as that's impossible. Just asking for some kind of 'plan' to make things safer.

There was 2,604 new cases yesterday according to BBC, although granted won't be all of them. So it is getting to the point the lockdown is doing more harm then good.

You could be right, and no one doubts that the lockdown has to be eased. But surely it has to be carefully planned - unlike the (lack of) planning so far. No one can honestly say that it's been well handled up to this date.

There was no template for this crisis. I think that the government, the scientists and the NHS has done a very good job. Anyone who thinks otherwise is making political capital over the most serious issue this country has ever faced and that is shameful.
To the OP, with a masters degree, why not train to be teacher? They are well paid and are on full pay while not working to capacity. No wonder they don't want to return! Surely they do not have children's best interests at heart? Children need to be back in school and someone here suggested cancelling the six week holiday to catch up. Good idea.

agreed and dont forget one important thing to think about with this stat is that testing was in excess of 100,000.
3,000 new cases with 25,000 being tested is not a good situation and does display that it is not under control
2,600 new cases with >100,000 tests shows things are (getting) under control
There is still 2 weeks to go untill 1st June - -plenty of time to get reasonable/sensible measures in place

A lot of teachers have worked over the Easter holidays, either providing zoom lessons or similar, or actually in school looking after the children of key workers. They must be exhausted and due a break.
I would move the "Summer holiday" to June. Shut schools for June and reopen at the beginning of August. That has the benefit of giving teachers a rest and delays the return to July, that should help the covid concern. It will also mean children won't miss out on their education. August can be a catch up on  key work missing before children move to their new school year in September.

Good sensible solution - however as can be seen by the myriad of posts on this and other forums - working people rely on schools to enable themselves to go to work.
Schools are actually the key to unlocking this mess and getting back to "normal"
We are heading towards the dangerous scenario where fear is becoming a bigger barrier than reality

You would be horrified what the public get up to in hospitals - i think 5 year olds would leave less mess

The risk of death at present is of a similar magnitude as during the height of a normal winter ‘flu. While it’s right to take precautions some people do seem to be lacking a sense of proportion.
