I am going to be putting together a new build and I need advice....

I plant to re-use my twin 970 GTXs SLi, SSD, HDD and optical drive in my new build, whilst I save for each additional component. I don't want SLI any more. It looks pretty having the cooling pipes connected to each card, but I might as well get a single card, as SLI is not supported by games software.I work within the voluntary sector, supporting vulnerable people to rebuild their lives.

Just bought the Cosmos C700M from CCL @ £398.61
I will recycle the EVGA SuperNOVA P2 PSU that I am currently using.
Next on my shopping list is the RAM...
My budget only allows me to make one or two transactions each month...so it will take a while...still...Rome wasn't built in a day I guess...I am basically spending my holiday money as all those plans have been terminated...so everything will stay on budget...

Personally if I was spending £400 on a case I'd want it to do far more than just sit on the desk looking... massive.0

What would you expect a case to do, out of interest?
I'm not a huge fan of big cases or water cooling loops either, but I guess it's just an aesthetic choice.

For £400 I expect it to wash the dishes, fold the laundry and make tea on demand

I didn't used to have such big cases. But you can get everything so neat and tidy with the extra space. Lots of room for my radiators, fans, pump, reservoir, hoses and fittings. The Cosmos is also handy as it has two sturdy carrying handles on the top.

I just like to play with my toys...Neil_Jones said:For £400 I expect it to wash the dishes, fold the laundry and make tea on demand

Willing2Learn said:I just like to play with my toys...You'll find that many will not understand it. I had the exact same when I was looking to build my first PC.What are you buying that component for? It's overkill for what you use..... because I want to.What are you going with that storage for? You'll never use it all. Save money and go for x-TB instead of y-TB.....you never know. Why are you going 16GB RAM? 4GB is all you need for your usage....why do you spend your money on drink and cigarettes and takeaways every week? Because you want to. I don't spend on those things. My MOBO can hold 16GB so that's what is being put in. Overkill probably but i'm not caring. Throwing money away maybe, but then am i preaching to you about your wine and your cigarettes?0

umm... okay...I don't smoke or drink...
I have my first choice to make. A straight choice between a Z390 or Z490 board. I will buy the memory first though, so that means I can delay my decision by a few weeks. I am definitely leaning toward the Z490 for the new CPUs with a Comet Lake flavour

You really need to sort your whole budget and system out in one go, it sounds like you are towards a mess.
What CPU are you actually buying / can you afford to buy? What graphics card did you settle on?
